TURRIFF,<br />

KING EDWAED AND NEW BYTH.<br />

TUEEIFF is a town <strong>of</strong> considerable importance,<br />

<strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a presbytery and a free burgh <strong>of</strong> barony<br />

in <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong> its name, very pleasantly situated<br />

near <strong>the</strong> river Deveron and <strong>the</strong> Great <strong>North</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> line <strong>of</strong> Eailway from Abei'deen to Macduff<br />

and Banff, <strong>the</strong> station at Turriff being 32^ miles<br />

from Aberdeen, 11 from Macduff or Banff, 17 N.N.W.<br />

by road, from Meldrum, 6 from Cuminestown, and 8<br />

from New Byth. Turriff enjoys a considerable trade<br />

with a large portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

county, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> large and well-stocked merchants<br />

and traders' estabhshments are sufficient evidence.<br />

Provision and fish curing is successfully carried on.<br />

Various o<strong>the</strong>r branches <strong>of</strong> industry flourish in <strong>the</strong><br />

town, including agricultural implement works and<br />

coach building. Four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> important banking<br />

corporations have branches here, and <strong>the</strong> hotel<br />

accommodation is all that could be desired. A charter<br />

was granted in 1511 by James IV. in favour <strong>of</strong><br />

Thomas Dickson, prebend <strong>of</strong> Turriff, entitling <strong>the</strong><br />

inhabitants to hold a market weekly on Sunday and<br />

three fairs annually, each to continue eight days.<br />

Markets for cattle, &c., are now held on <strong>the</strong> second<br />

and fourth Wednesday in each month, and hiring or<br />

feeing markets on <strong>the</strong> Saturday before <strong>the</strong> 27th <strong>of</strong><br />

May, <strong>the</strong> fourth Wednesday in July, and <strong>the</strong> Saturday<br />

before <strong>the</strong> 23rd November. The town being<br />

situated on an eminence commands an extensive view<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> adjacent picturesque country. Forglen House,<br />

<strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> Sir George Abercrombie, Bart., and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

elegant mansions are in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood. The<br />

presbytery <strong>of</strong> Turriff' includes <strong>the</strong> following parishes<br />

and missions :—Auchterless, Drumblade, Forglen,<br />

Forgue, Fyvie, St. Mary's Mission, Fyvie; Gamrie, Inverkeithney.<br />

King Edward, Macdiiff', MUlbrex, Monquitter.<br />

New Byth, Turriff, and Ythan Wells. The<br />

Eev. Donald Stewart, King Edward, is clerk to <strong>the</strong><br />

presbytery. The places <strong>of</strong> worship include <strong>the</strong> Established<br />

and Free chm-ches, and an Episcopahan<br />

chapel. In addition to <strong>the</strong> usual public schools, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is a highly respectable boarding school for young<br />

ladies.<br />

KING EDWAED or KEN-EDAE is an extensive<br />

parish, bounded on <strong>the</strong> south by Turriff and Monquitter,<br />

on <strong>the</strong> east by Fyvie, and on <strong>the</strong> north by<br />

Gamrie. The G. N. S. railway station <strong>of</strong> King<br />

Edward is 6i miles from Turriff and 4ifrom Macduff.<br />

The parish, which extends 12 miles in length from<br />

south-east to north-west, and from two to five miles<br />

in breadth, is only partly under cultivation, but<br />

improving annually.<br />

NEW BYTH, eight miles distant from <strong>the</strong> Turriff<br />

or King Edward railway stations, is a village and<br />

quoad sacra parish, situated on <strong>the</strong> south-east border<br />

<strong>of</strong> King Edward.<br />

—Letters arrive from Aberdeen and <strong>the</strong> South at<br />

9.15 a.m. and 1.15 p.m., and are despatched <strong>the</strong>reto<br />

at 6 a.m., 12.15 p.m., and 4 p.m. Letters also arrive<br />

from <strong>the</strong> <strong>North</strong> (from Banff) at 6.40 a.m. and 12.40<br />

p.m., and are despatched <strong>the</strong>reto at 9 a.m. and 12.50<br />

p.m. Local mails from Cumineston, Garmond, and<br />

New Byth line <strong>of</strong> road arrive about 9 a.m., and are<br />

despatched at 9.30 a.m. Money Order Office,<br />

Telegraph, and Savings' Bank.<br />

Post Office, King Edward, John Lumsden, postmaster.—Letters<br />

arrive from Banff at 1.50 p.m., and<br />

are despatched <strong>the</strong>reto at 3.30 p.m.<br />

Post Office, New Byth, Joseph Gibb, postmaster.<br />

Letters arrive from Turriff at 1.10 p.m., and are<br />

despatched <strong>the</strong>reto at 5.30 a.m. Box closes <strong>the</strong><br />

previous night.<br />
