Tesasi, on the west coast of Yeso, is also a large town ; but Matumai, or Fuku-yama,<br />

the southernmost town in the isknd at the western entrance of Tsugar Strait, has<br />

lost much of the importance it possessed in the old feudal times, when it was' the<br />

residence of a native prince.<br />

The anchorage is bad, especially during the southern<br />

winds, and it has been deprived of the commercial advantages now transferred by<br />

the treaties to Hakodate.<br />

Lying beyond the rice zone, the northern extremity of Hondo is but thinly<br />

peopled, no numerous communities occurring till we reach the valley<br />
