BOOK OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY OF<br />

EVAGRIUS SCHOLASTICUS<br />

1. Concerning the reign <strong>of</strong> Zeno and his life.<br />

2. Concerning barbarian invasions in the East and West.<br />

3. Concerning the usurpation <strong>of</strong> Basiliscus and Zeno’s £ight.<br />

4. That Basiliscus recalled Timothy Aelurus and, being persuaded<br />

by him, sent out encyclical letters everywhere to annul the Synod at Chalcedon.<br />

5. Concerning those who assented to Basiliscus’ Encyclicals and<br />

annulled the Synod.<br />

6. That, after Timothy Aelurus had regained the Alexandrians’ see<br />

and returned the patriarchal right to that <strong>of</strong> the Ephesians, he subjected<br />

the Synod at Chalcedon to anathema.<br />

7. That, after the monks had rioted at the instigation <strong>of</strong> Acacius,<br />

Basiliscus in terror sent out Counter-Encyclicals, having written the<br />

opposite <strong>of</strong> the previous ones.<br />

8. Concerning the return <strong>of</strong> Zeno.<br />

9. That, after the death <strong>of</strong> Basiliscus, in order to conciliate Acacius<br />

the bishops <strong>of</strong> Asia provided a document <strong>of</strong> repentance for the wrong<br />

they had done in annulling the Synod at Chalcedon.<br />

10. Concerning those who were bishop at Antioch.<br />

11. That the emperor Zeno wished to pursue Aelurus, but took pity<br />

on him because <strong>of</strong> his age and left him; and that after he had died, Peter<br />

Mongus was elected by the Alexandrians, but Timothy the successor <strong>of</strong><br />

Proterius occupied the Alexandrians’ throne on the emperor’s decision.<br />

12. Concerning John who held the rudders <strong>of</strong> the Alexandrians’ see<br />

after Timothy; how Zeno drove him out for being forsworn and entrusted<br />

the Alexandrians’ see to Peter Mongus.<br />

[95] 13. That Peter Mongus accepted the Henoticon <strong>of</strong> Zeno and joined<br />

to himself the followers <strong>of</strong> Proterius.<br />

14. Concerning the so-called Henoticon <strong>of</strong> Zeno.<br />

15. That John <strong>of</strong> Alexandria arrived in Rome and in£uenced Simplicius<br />

against Zeno, to write to Zeno concerning what had happened.
