VISHNU SAHASRANAMA<br />
<strong>of</strong> Aditi <strong>the</strong> undifferentiated Mo<strong>the</strong>r Earth. The S'ruti<br />
(Tai. Sam., 5-1-7) says : " She is Aditi." (Tai. Br., 3-1-2) :<br />
" The Divine Earth <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> <strong>Vishnu</strong> " ; or as <strong>the</strong> one<br />
Sun reflects himself as many in several vessels <strong>of</strong> water, so<br />
<strong>the</strong> one Atman shows as many in <strong>the</strong> various bodies, hence<br />
this resemblance to <strong>the</strong> Sun.<br />

42. Of mighty sound (Mahasvanah).<br />
Or <strong>the</strong> holy sound, or being <strong>the</strong> S'ruti, <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong><br />
God. The S'ruti (Br. Up., 4-4-10) : " Thus, Maitreyi ! has<br />
been brea<strong>the</strong>d forth from this great Being what we have as<br />
Rigveda, Yajurveda."<br />
43. Devoid o£ birth and death (Anadinidhanah).<br />
44. The supporter (Dhata).<br />
He supports <strong>the</strong> worlds in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> Ananta ( Adis'esha)<br />
and o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
Vya. Dhata is in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> Brahma as he conceives<br />
(Dhatri) all.<br />
45. The dispenser (Vidhata). (484)<br />
He is <strong>the</strong> dispenser <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fruit <strong>of</strong> action and inducer<br />
<strong>of</strong> actions ; or Vidhata means <strong>the</strong> supporter (Dhata) <strong>of</strong> even<br />
(vi) Ananta and o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
46. The best <strong>of</strong> all substances (Dhaturuttamah).<br />
The meaning is that he is <strong>the</strong> principle called chit<br />
(consciousness) which is superior to all o<strong>the</strong>rs, earth, etc. ;<br />
or he is superior to Dhata (Brahma) ; or this may be taken<br />
as two different names, viz., * Dhatuh ' and 'Uttamah'.<br />
Dhatu ' means <strong>the</strong> chit which sustains <strong>the</strong> Universe <strong>of</strong><br />
cause and effect.<br />
' ' Uttama means <strong>the</strong> highest <strong>of</strong> all on<br />
account <strong>of</strong> His having gone above all <strong>the</strong> best things.<br />
