Configuring browsers for the Web proxy server
You should inform users on your internal network how they should configure
their Web browsers to use the Web proxy server.
Note: You should not need to configure your browsers if you are in transparent
mode.
To set up the browsers to work with the Web proxy server for Web connections,
there are two basic steps:
• Specify the Sidewinder G2 fully qualified host name or IP address in the
browser’s proxy line.
• Specify port number 3128 or whatever port you configured for the Web
proxy server.
Below are the setup procedures for recent versions of Mozilla Firefox, Internet
Explorer, and Netscape. If your users have older versions, consider providing
them with the latest version. For other browsers, consult that browser’s
documentation for defining an HTTP proxy server.
Mozilla Firefox 1.0
To configure Mozilla Firefox for the Web proxy server, do the following:
1 Start the Mozilla Firefox browser and select Tools > Options.
2 Click Connection Settings.
3 Select the Manual Proxy Configuration radio button.
4 In the HTTP Proxy field, enter the fully qualified host name or IP address of
your Sidewinder G2. For example, SWG2name.example.com
5 In the corresponding Port field, enter 3128 or whatever port you configured
for the Web proxy server.
6 Click OK.
Internet Explorer 4.0
To configure Internet Explorer 4.0 for the Web proxy server, do the following:
1 Open the Control Panel window.
2 Double click the Internet icon.
3 Click the Connection tab. In the Proxy Server section enable the option titled
Access the Internet using a proxy server.
4 Fill in the text boxes next to HTTP Proxy and Port.
