Chapter 3: General System Tasks Configuration file backup and restore Configuration file backup and restore 50 This feature enables you to backup and restore Sidewinder G2 configuration files. Backing up the configuration files enables you to quickly restore a Sidewinder G2 to a previous operational state. Table 7 shows the difference between a configuration backup and a system file backup. Overview of configuration file backup and restore This section covers backing up and restoring configuration files using the Admin Console. System file backup and restore procedures, and configuration restores using the command line, are described in Appendix F, “Basic Troubleshooting.” Back up the full system before and after making major changes to your Sidewinder G2, such as adding new hardware. Table 7: Configuration backup/restore vs. system file backup/restore Configuration backup and restore System file backup and restore Backs up and restores just the Sidewinder G2 configuration files. Backs up the files to diskette, to itself, or to the hard drive of another Sidewinder G2. Backs up and restores the entire Sidewinder G2 hard drive. Backs up the Sidewinder G2 hard drive to a DAT. Does not allow incremental backups. Allows incremental backups. You backup and restore from within the Operational kernel. This enables you to perform the backup and restore on another Sidewinder G2. Can be performed on either a local or a remote Sidewinder G2, using the Admin Console. Enables you to restore a Sidewinder G2 without having to re-install from scratch. Restores only the configuration files. Mail queues, audit trails, etc., are not restored. Does not backup site-specific changes made to non-configuration files. The backup and restore process is quick. Requires you to boot to the Administrative kernel to perform the backup and restore. This means you cannot perform this backup and restore on another Sidewinder G2. Can only be performed locally using the Installation Wizard. Requires you to re-install from scratch using the DAT. Restores the entire system as it existed at the time of the backup. This includes old mail queues, audit trail information, etc. Backs up all site-specific changes. The backup and restore process is not as quick.

Option 2) Back up your Sidewinder G2 configuration files to its own hard drive (used to allow you to FTP the configuration backup to another location, for instance). Option 3) Back up a Sidewinder G2 to a different Sidewinder G2. What is backed up and restored Chapter 3: General System Tasks Configuration file backup and restore Figure 20 displays the various options you have when using the configuration backup process. Sidewinder G2 local Sidewinder G2 SSL connection local Sidewinder G2 Internet remote Sidewinder G2 There are two files that determine which configuration files will be backed up and restored. The files are located in the /etc/backups/config_backup directory and are named: • backup_file_list — Contains the list of files and directories that will be included in the configuration backup/restore process. Wild cards can be used when specifying names in this file. • exclude_file_list — Defines the files within backup_file_list that should be excluded from the configuration backup/restore process. For example, files that contain graphics are located in some of the directories specified in backup_file_list that should not be included in the configuration backup/ restore process. You cannot specify directory names or use wild cards in this file. Caution: While it is possible to modify these two files, do so with caution. To prevent accidental modification, these files are defined as read-only. If you absolutely must modify one of these files, use the Admin Console. 51
