Appendix E: Setting Up SmartFilter Services Overview of SmartFilter for Sidewinder G2 Overview of SmartFilter for Sidewinder G2 Controlling Web access using the SmartFilter Control List 628 SmartFilter controls your company’s users’ access to the Internet. When configured with Sidewinder G2, SmartFilter manages Internet access at several levels, ranging from simple access restrictions to thorough blocking of all sites deemed unproductive or non-business related. Note: This appendix pertains to SmartFilter 4.0.2. If you use SmartFilter 3.x, refer to the Sidewinder G2 online help for information. In order to use SmartFilter, you must: 1 Purchase and activate SmartFilter. 2 Install the SmartFilter administration software. Go to http://www.securecomputing.com/goto/sf/downloads to download and install the software. 3 Configure your SmartFilter policy using the SmartFilter Admin Console. Consult the SmartFilter documentation before configuring. 4 Configure SmartFilter for Sidewinder G2. Go to “Configuring SmartFilter for HTTP/HTTPS” on page 630 for configuration information and instructions. SmartFilter uses a Control List that contains millions of URLs. These URLs are categorized into pre-defined categories. You configure which categories are allowed, blocked, coached, or delayed. • For a list of the categories used by Sidewinder G2, see Table 41 on page 633. • For a description of each category, go to http://securecomputing.com/goto/ controllist. • For more information on SmartFilter and the Control List, please read the SmartFilter Primer. Evaluating the SmartFilter Control List If you are not a current SmartFilter user, you can evaluate the full Control List by following the steps contained in the sections that follow. Evaluating the full Control List You can retrieve a 30-day evaluation copy of the full Control List by performing the following steps: 1 Go to http://www.smartfilter.com. 2 Click the Product Evaluation option. 3 Select SmartFilter for Sidewinder G2 Firewall from the drop-down list.
4 Click Evaluate this version. 5 Complete and submit the registration form. Appendix E: Setting Up SmartFilter Services Controlling Web access using the SmartFilter Control List Within one business day after you complete and submit the registration form, you will receive information via e-mail that includes an evaluation serial number. Enter this serial number into the SmartFilter Administration Console during or after installation to obtain the Control List. Subscribing to the SmartFilter Control List 1 Order the SmartFilter service option through Secure Computing or your reseller. After you submit your order, you will be mailed an activation certificate with a serial number. 2 Enter this serial number into the SmartFilter Administration Console, Enterprise > License window, to download the Control List. 629
