considered it a problem. Much smaller<br />

proportions of farmers were able to<br />

recognize whiteflies <strong>and</strong> many<br />

expressed surprise when <strong>in</strong>formed of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir role as disease vectors. There<br />

were significant differences between<br />

countries <strong>in</strong> this respect, however, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> extremes be<strong>in</strong>g Madagascar, where<br />

no farmers reported recogniz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

whiteflies, <strong>and</strong> Ben<strong>in</strong>, where 70%<br />

recognized <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Farmers had names for whiteflies<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>whitefly</strong>-transmitted diseases <strong>in</strong> all<br />

countries, but <strong>in</strong> many cases <strong>the</strong>se<br />

were non-specific, translat<strong>in</strong>g simply as<br />

“<strong>in</strong>sect” or “disease”. More specific<br />

names were commonest for CMD,<br />

which was often described us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

anthropomorphic disease equivalents<br />

such as “leprosy”. Names for SPVD<br />

were often exactly <strong>the</strong> same as those<br />

used for CMD. Where such names are<br />

<strong>in</strong> common usage, potential exists for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir use, perhaps with m<strong>in</strong>or<br />

modification, <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> extension<br />

programs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future. Estimates of<br />

loss to <strong>the</strong> respective diseases were<br />

most frequently <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> range of 25%-<br />

75% for cassava <strong>and</strong> 25% or less for<br />

sweetpotato, although most survey<br />

teams considered that <strong>the</strong>se were likely<br />

to be overestimates, particularly <strong>in</strong><br />

West African countries, where disease<br />

symptoms (<strong>in</strong> this case only CMD) were<br />

typically mild. Participatory yield loss<br />

studies would be helpful <strong>in</strong> many of <strong>the</strong><br />

surveyed countries to evaluate losses<br />

scientifically <strong>and</strong> reconcile such<br />

estimates with farmer perceptions. The<br />

shortcom<strong>in</strong>g of this <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

responses emphasized <strong>the</strong> need to l<strong>in</strong>k<br />

producer <strong>in</strong>terviews with <strong>the</strong> collection<br />

of more objective field data.<br />

Manag<strong>in</strong>g whiteflies <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>whitefly</strong>-transmitted <strong>viruses</strong><br />

There were widely divergent responses<br />

on <strong>the</strong> use of vector <strong>and</strong> disease<br />

management measures. In Ghana <strong>and</strong><br />

Madagascar, less than 5% of farmers<br />

reported do<strong>in</strong>g anyth<strong>in</strong>g at all to<br />

control CMD. This result was<br />

particularly anomalous for Ghana,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce many farmers reported relatively<br />

high losses. Management practices<br />

were most widely reported <strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a<br />

<strong>and</strong> Cameroon, where most farmers<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>the</strong> use of at least one<br />

practice. The most cited methods of<br />

disease management were <strong>the</strong><br />

phytosanitary techniques of rogu<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> selection of disease-free stems.<br />

This has to be set aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong><br />

predom<strong>in</strong>ance of <strong>the</strong> use of diseased<br />

cutt<strong>in</strong>gs as plant<strong>in</strong>g material <strong>in</strong> almost<br />

all areas surveyed. Selection of diseasefree<br />

plant<strong>in</strong>g material similarly was<br />

cited widely as a management tactic<br />

but <strong>the</strong> health status of stems was<br />

normally less important as a criterion<br />

for plant<strong>in</strong>g material selection than<br />

were agronomic characters.<br />

Although it appears that farmers<br />

over-estimated <strong>the</strong>ir use of rogu<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

selection of healthy cutt<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

under-reported use of disease-resistant<br />

varieties. Use of cassava varieties<br />

recommended for resistance to CMD<br />

was most widespread <strong>in</strong> Cameroon,<br />

where 48% of farmers reported grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

variety “Agric” <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> knowledge that it<br />

was resistant to CMD. In Ug<strong>and</strong>a, more<br />

than 15% of sweetpotato farmers were<br />

found to be grow<strong>in</strong>g SPVD-resistant<br />

varieties but none of <strong>the</strong>se realized that<br />

this was a method of manag<strong>in</strong>g SPVD.<br />

Very few farmers reported us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pesticides to control whiteflies or<br />

<strong>whitefly</strong>-<strong>borne</strong> <strong>viruses</strong>. Occasionally,<br />

sweetpotato farmers reported pesticide<br />

use but this was more likely to be for<br />

<strong>the</strong> purpose of controll<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>sect<br />

pests such as <strong>the</strong> sweetpotato butterfly<br />

Acraea acerata Hewitson. Chapter 1.13<br />

assessment of <strong>the</strong> approaches of<br />

sweetpotato farmers to SPVD control.<br />

Few farmers reported hav<strong>in</strong>g received<br />

any technical assistance with respect<br />
