survey, lead scientists <strong>in</strong> each country<br />

were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> survey methods.<br />

Surveys were conducted between<br />

November 1997 <strong>and</strong> September 1998.<br />

The results are reported <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

subsequent country chapters <strong>in</strong> this<br />

section. Data from <strong>the</strong> producer<br />

questionnaires for all countries were<br />

entered <strong>in</strong>to a s<strong>in</strong>gle database from<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y could be summarized <strong>and</strong><br />

queried. Field data from all countries<br />

were summarized <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated to<br />

partnership with research <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />

outside Africa were <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong> early<br />

1998 <strong>and</strong> completed by mid-1999;<br />

results are reported later <strong>in</strong> this section<br />
