characterization of whiteflies <strong>and</strong> WTVs<br />
<strong>in</strong> target cropp<strong>in</strong>g systems. This<br />
characterization comprehends both<br />
characterization at molecular level,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g bio-typ<strong>in</strong>g of whiteflies, <strong>and</strong><br />
biological characterization of both<br />
whiteflies <strong>and</strong> WTVs with emphasis on<br />
host range, host preferences <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>teraction between <strong>the</strong> whiteflies <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>viruses</strong>.<br />
The aim is to cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />
streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> global <strong>whitefly</strong><br />
network set up by <strong>the</strong> TWF-IPM Project.<br />
Through this network, scientists from<br />
<strong>the</strong> region will enjoy <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
flow of knowledge <strong>and</strong> participation <strong>in</strong><br />
experimental research <strong>in</strong> order to boost<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>whitefly</strong> research <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir respective<br />
countries with new knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />
dissem<strong>in</strong>ate new control methods to <strong>the</strong><br />
national extension services <strong>and</strong><br />
vegetable producers. Initiatives taken to<br />
create an African <strong>Whitefly</strong> Network<br />
should cont<strong>in</strong>ue.<br />
More evidence must be recorded on<br />
yield depression due to whiteflies <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir transmitted <strong>viruses</strong>. Geographical<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation on agricultural regions,<br />
major crops, target crops, <strong>whitefly</strong>/<br />
virus hot spots, topographical <strong>and</strong><br />
climatic data, crop seasonality <strong>and</strong><br />
spatial patterns of cropp<strong>in</strong>g systems<br />
must be collected <strong>in</strong> order to apply<br />
geographic <strong>in</strong>formation systems to <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>formation created.<br />
There is an urgent need for <strong>the</strong><br />
immediate development of IPM<br />
components viable under <strong>the</strong> socioeconomic<br />
conditions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region.<br />
Selection, multiplication <strong>and</strong><br />
dissem<strong>in</strong>ation of tomato varieties<br />
resistant/tolerant to <strong>whitefly</strong> <strong>and</strong>/or<br />
ToLCVs were given first priority <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
development of <strong>the</strong> IPM component.<br />
AVRDC should ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> multiply a<br />
“package” of resistant germplasm from<br />
all over <strong>the</strong> world <strong>and</strong> distribute it to<br />
<strong>the</strong> national partners for screen<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Whiteflies <strong>and</strong> <strong>Whitefly</strong>-<strong>borne</strong> Viruses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tropics<br />
selection, multiplication <strong>and</strong><br />
dissem<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />
Development of physical barriers<br />
for vector control was given second<br />
priority <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> IPM<br />
component. Different physical<br />
screen<strong>in</strong>g methods to prevent early<br />
<strong>in</strong>vasion of whiteflies should be<br />
ga<strong>the</strong>red from all over <strong>the</strong> world <strong>and</strong><br />
tested as physical control measures<br />
under <strong>the</strong> socio-economic <strong>and</strong> climatic<br />
conditions <strong>in</strong> each partner country.<br />
Test<strong>in</strong>g rational use of conventional<br />
<strong>and</strong> non-conventional <strong>in</strong>secticides was<br />
given third priority <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
IPM component. Producers urgently<br />
need alternative control methods <strong>in</strong><br />
order to meet <strong>the</strong> new requirements of<br />
pesticide residue-free products for <strong>the</strong><br />
export market. Regional monitor<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
<strong>in</strong>secticide resistance of whiteflies will<br />
provide useful <strong>in</strong>formation to conv<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
policy makers of <strong>the</strong> need for<br />
develop<strong>in</strong>g alternative control methods.<br />
Non-conventional <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous<br />
methods from all over <strong>the</strong> world such<br />
as oil, non-phytotoxic soaps, botanicals<br />
<strong>and</strong> ash should be ga<strong>the</strong>red <strong>in</strong> a<br />
“package” <strong>and</strong> tested <strong>in</strong> partner<br />
countries by means of a st<strong>and</strong>ardized<br />
methodology that will allow<br />
comparisons across ecosystems.<br />
Evaluation of <strong>the</strong> effect of both<br />
conventional <strong>and</strong> non-conventional<br />
control methods on natural enemies<br />
<strong>and</strong> biological control agents such as<br />
parasitoids <strong>and</strong> entomopathogens will<br />
reveal <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong>ir potential<br />
environmental impact <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
suitability <strong>in</strong> organic farm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> mechanism<br />
beh<strong>in</strong>d effective cultural practices <strong>in</strong><br />
order to def<strong>in</strong>e appropriate cropp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
sequences also was put on <strong>the</strong> agenda.<br />
Such studies may require several years<br />
<strong>and</strong> experimental cropp<strong>in</strong>g seasons<br />
<strong>and</strong> may not provide immediate<br />
applicable <strong>in</strong>formation for producers as
