elation to its ability to transmit<br />

cassava mosaic <strong>viruses</strong> over <strong>the</strong><br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g period of <strong>the</strong> crop. Field<br />

studies <strong>the</strong>refore might be necessary to<br />

quantify such changes, assess whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

parasitism by E. sophia has any<br />

significant impact on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sect’s<br />

abundance <strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong> epidemiology trials,<br />

to ascerta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ability of B. tabaci to<br />

spread cassava mosaic <strong>viruses</strong> to a<br />

range of cassava varieties.<br />

National research capacity needs to<br />

be enhanced <strong>in</strong> order to allow project<br />

partners to undertake fur<strong>the</strong>r research<br />

on <strong>the</strong> <strong>whitefly</strong>/CMD issues raised<br />

here. In this regard, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of national<br />

program partners <strong>in</strong> appropriate areas<br />

would streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> collaborative<br />

l<strong>in</strong>kages <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pilot phase of<br />

<strong>the</strong> project <strong>and</strong> provide a strong base<br />

for provid<strong>in</strong>g susta<strong>in</strong>able technical<br />

support to cassava farmers. Key areas<br />

for streng<strong>the</strong>ned national research<br />

capacity <strong>in</strong>clude post-graduate degree<br />

cassava mosaic virology, <strong>and</strong> fieldbased<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of technicians <strong>and</strong><br />

extension workers <strong>in</strong> participatory<br />

processes <strong>and</strong> facilitation. Technician<br />

<strong>and</strong> extension tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g will <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

scientific literacy <strong>in</strong> farm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

communities <strong>and</strong> foster action research<br />

<strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g with farmers. This will<br />

improve farmers’ currently poor access<br />

to <strong>in</strong>formation, will help <strong>the</strong>m<br />

underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> causes <strong>and</strong> nature of<br />

<strong>the</strong> disease problem <strong>and</strong> will highlight<br />

effective cultural control options such<br />

as plant<strong>in</strong>g material selection <strong>and</strong><br />
