Introduction<br />

Geographical context<br />

Field surveys cover<strong>in</strong>g 94 farms were<br />

conducted <strong>in</strong> 1997-98 follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

methodology agreed among project<br />

partners. The farms represented:<br />

Kir<strong>in</strong>yaga, Thika, Muranga, Kiambu,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Nairobi Districts <strong>in</strong> Central<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce; Machakos, Athi River, Meru,<br />

Kitui, <strong>and</strong> Kibwezi Districts <strong>in</strong> Eastern<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce; Kwale, Kilifi, <strong>and</strong> Taita Taveta<br />

Districts <strong>in</strong> Coast Prov<strong>in</strong>ce; Kajiado<br />

<strong>and</strong> Naivasha Districts <strong>in</strong> Rift Valley<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce; Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, <strong>and</strong><br />

Siaya Districts <strong>in</strong> Nyanza Prov<strong>in</strong>ce; <strong>and</strong><br />

Vihiga <strong>and</strong> Busia Districts <strong>in</strong> Western<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce (Figure 1). The districts were<br />

selected based on <strong>the</strong> prevalence of <strong>the</strong><br />

cultivation of tomato (Lycopersicon<br />

esculentum Mill.). Table 1 gives <strong>the</strong><br />

mean annual temperatures <strong>and</strong><br />

precipitation for each of <strong>the</strong> surveyed<br />

regions.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> surveyed regions, tomato is<br />

planted throughout <strong>the</strong> year with <strong>the</strong><br />

exceptions noted below. Eastern<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce is a region of semi-arid lower<br />

mid-altitude l<strong>and</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g transitional<br />

semi-humid towards Central Prov<strong>in</strong>ce;<br />

here, tomato is not planted <strong>in</strong> July.<br />
