409 Jeremiah <strong>Lewis</strong>, born in Dighton, Mass., Dec.<br />

2, 1806 ; died Nov. 15, 1882. He was a mason <strong>and</strong> built<br />

the water works at New Bedford, Mass., <strong>and</strong> many fine<br />

buildings in New York city <strong>and</strong> Brooklyn, N. Y. He<br />

married in Thompson, Conn., Dec. 29, 1835, Luetta L.<br />

Carpenter born at Woodstock, Conn., Feb. 2, 1812, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Elijah <strong>and</strong> Phebe (Wilson) Carpenter.<br />

758. MARIA ALMIRA, b. in Thompson, Conn., Oct. 1, 1836; m. Mar.<br />

26, 1861, Isaac C. Manchester <strong>of</strong> Tiverton, R. I. They were<br />

school teachers. She began to teach at the age <strong>of</strong> 16, <strong>and</strong><br />

taught at Cohasset <strong>and</strong> Taunton, Mass. She has been engaged<br />

in philanthropic work along several lines, including<br />

the W. C. T. U., <strong>and</strong> was National President <strong>of</strong> the Loyal<br />

Women <strong>of</strong> American Liberty. They lived in Providence,<br />

R. I. Children: (1) Hattie <strong>Lewis</strong>, b. Dec. 14, 1864; m. Mar.<br />

5, 1891, Frank N. Pidge; (2) Annie Maria, b. June 6, 1866;<br />

m. Sept. 1, 1887, Arthur E. Hill <strong>of</strong> Andover, Mass.<br />

411 Alfred <strong>Lewis</strong>, born Feb. 28, 1810 in Dighton,<br />

Mass. He was a mason by trade but in 1836 removed to<br />

Providence, R. I., where he successfully engaged in the<br />

jewelry <strong>and</strong> hardware business, for 18 years. In 1856 he<br />

removed to Wheaton, 111., <strong>and</strong> became a Trustee <strong>of</strong><br />

Wheaton College. He died in Chicago, 111., June 10,<br />

1876. He married in Providence, R. I., Nov. 16, 1836,<br />

Hannah Farnham, b. Nov. 16, 1807, daughter <strong>of</strong> Stephen<br />

<strong>and</strong> Olive (Leffingwell) Farnham <strong>of</strong> Plainfield, Conn.
