735 Dexter Bosworth <strong>Lewis</strong>, born in Providence,<br />

R. I., Sept. 20, 1820, was a merchant. He was a councilman<br />

in 1851-1853, 1875 <strong>and</strong> 1876, <strong>and</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Marine Artillery Company. He was a director in the<br />

Old Liberty Bank <strong>and</strong> the Second National Bank <strong>and</strong> also<br />

in the Board <strong>of</strong> Trade. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the firm <strong>of</strong><br />

Burroughs & <strong>Lewis</strong>, engaged in the oil <strong>and</strong> cotton business<br />

<strong>and</strong> for many years was in partnership with Col. J.<br />

Lippitt Snow, under the firm name <strong>of</strong> Snow & <strong>Lewis</strong>,<br />

h<strong>and</strong>ling dye stuffs <strong>and</strong> chemicals. He married in Providence,<br />

R. I., Sept. 6, 1842, Mary Ann Leveck, born in<br />

Bristol, R. I., Mar. 29, 1822, daughter <strong>of</strong> John C. <strong>and</strong><br />

Lucy W. (Dexter) Leveck. He died July 17, 1887.<br />

1064. JOHN DEXTER, b. Mar. 19, 1846; m. Apr. 2, 1872, Sophie P.<br />

Lapham, b. Apr. 4, 1848, dau. <strong>of</strong> Hon. Benj. N. <strong>and</strong> Sophia<br />

M. (Bullock) Lapham. While fishing from a launch, Feb.<br />

26, 1901, on Lake Worth, Fla., a storm came up suddenly<br />

<strong>and</strong> overturned the craft, <strong>and</strong> Mrs. <strong>Lewis</strong> was caught in<br />

the awning <strong>and</strong> drowned; her husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> youngest<br />

daughter narrowly escaped by clinging to the bottom <strong>of</strong><br />

the boat. They were among the most prominent people<br />

<strong>of</strong> Providence. They had : (1) John Bosworth, b. Mar. 19,<br />

1874; m. Miss Watson, dau. <strong>of</strong> Col. Arthur N. Watson <strong>of</strong><br />

Providence; (2) Benjamin Lapham, b. Sept. 4, 1875; d.<br />

Sept. 9, 1876; (3) Mary Louise, b. July 31, 1877.<br />

1065. ELLEN LEVECK, b. June 4, 1851; m. Nov. 20, 1873, Stephen<br />

M. Knowles, s. <strong>of</strong> Ex-Mayor Edward P. Knowles,<strong>and</strong> had,<br />

b. in Providence: (1) Helen <strong>Lewis</strong>, b. Jan. 30, 1875; (2<br />

Stephen Dexter, b. May 31, 1880.<br />

740 Alfred Bosworth <strong>Lewis</strong>, was born in Providence,<br />

R. I., June 7, 1819, <strong>and</strong> died August, 1889. He<br />

married, first, Nov. 21, 1842, Sarah B. Fields, who was divorced.<br />

He married, second, Josephine V. Benson, born<br />

1822, <strong>and</strong> died April 2, 1858.<br />

Children <strong>of</strong> Alfred Bosworth <strong>and</strong> Josephine V. <strong>Lewis</strong> :<br />
