about to be married he went to Boston to buy furniture. He<br />

reached there <strong>and</strong> nothing was ever heard <strong>of</strong> him after. A<br />

case <strong>of</strong> mysterious disappearance.<br />

1873, m. in <strong>Lynn</strong>, Dec. 10, 1826, Samuel Fowler Jr. b. in<br />

<strong>Lynn</strong> Apr. 19, 1803, d. there Dec. 28, 1887, son <strong>of</strong> Samuel<br />

<strong>and</strong> Elizabeth (?) Fowler <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lynn</strong>. He was a shoemaker <strong>and</strong><br />

lived in what is now Swampscott. Children born in <strong>Lynn</strong>:<br />

Aug. 14, 1905, daughter <strong>of</strong> Joshua <strong>and</strong> Sally Stone. No issue.<br />

They celebrated their golden wedding in 1895. He was engaged<br />

in shoemaking, fishing, a grocer, a shoe manufacturer<br />

for 25 years, <strong>and</strong> <strong>his</strong> last years in the real estate <strong>and</strong> insurance<br />

business. He was elected to public <strong>of</strong>fice more times<br />

than any other man in <strong>Lynn</strong>. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Water Board for eight years; Common Council in 1852-3,<br />

Alderman for 9 terms in succession from 1859 to 1871, <strong>and</strong><br />

Mayor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lynn</strong> from 1873 to 1887. He was <strong>of</strong> great influence<br />

in conducting negotiations in the settlement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

great strike in 1860, <strong>and</strong> he was founder <strong>and</strong> organizer <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Lynn</strong> Mutual Aid Association. He was one <strong>of</strong> the oldest<br />

<strong>and</strong> most respected citizens at the time <strong>of</strong> <strong>his</strong> death. He<br />

was greatly interested in the genealogy <strong>of</strong> <strong>his</strong> family <strong>and</strong><br />

while Mayor he examined all the records <strong>of</strong> the city. From<br />

what he gathered <strong>and</strong> knew personally <strong>and</strong> <strong>his</strong> brother Warren,<br />

now living, has confirmed, I have obtained much that<br />

is given in t<strong>his</strong> publication. He was a genial, whole-souled<br />

gentlemen <strong>of</strong> quiet thoughtful habits, <strong>his</strong> tendencies always<br />

being apart from a love <strong>of</strong> display.
