5. Nathaniel <strong>Lewis</strong> was born at Watertown, 25th,<br />

6 m., 1639. Caulkins' History <strong>of</strong> New London, p. 296,<br />

says, " Nathaniel <strong>and</strong> Joseph <strong>Lewis</strong> are names that appear<br />

on the rate list <strong>of</strong> 1667, as partners in estate. They were<br />

transient residents." They removed to Swansea <strong>and</strong> became<br />

inhabitants.<br />

At a town meeting, Dec. 1, 1669, " Nathaniel <strong>Lewis</strong> is<br />

admitted townsman, <strong>and</strong> is to have a 12 acre lot where it<br />

may be Judged Convenient." He was <strong>of</strong> the 3d rank Feb.<br />

7, 1670. In the Book <strong>of</strong> Possessions <strong>his</strong> l<strong>and</strong>s are recorded<br />

on page 107, except <strong>his</strong> lot No. 85 in the sheep pasture,<br />

alias Towoset Neck, which is recorded by a mistake with<br />

<strong>his</strong> brother Joseph's l<strong>and</strong>s on page 53. He married Mary<br />

-, <strong>and</strong> died Oct. 13, 1683.<br />

31. MARY, b. Dec. 4, 1677, at <strong>Lynn</strong>; m., June 10, 1693, John Cole, jr.,<br />

in Swansea, <strong>and</strong> had born there: (1) <strong>Lewis</strong>, b. Oct. 23, 1694;<br />

(2) Joanna, b. Feby. 20, 1686-7 ;<br />

(3) Nathan, b. Mar. 20, 1703.<br />

6. Joseph <strong>Lewis</strong>. There is no record <strong>of</strong> <strong>his</strong> birth.<br />

His father died in 1650, <strong>and</strong> in 1658 <strong>his</strong> mother was taken<br />

away, <strong>and</strong> John, <strong>his</strong> eldest brother, did not marry until the<br />

next year (17 June, 1059), so that <strong>his</strong> childhood was not<br />

very propitious <strong>and</strong> early in life he had to start to build<br />

<strong>his</strong> own fortune. Being used to the water, with <strong>his</strong> brother
