<strong>and</strong> barn <strong>of</strong> <strong>Edmund</strong> (1) which John (43) inherited from<br />

<strong>his</strong> father Thomas (9), who inherited it from John,<br />

Sen (2).<br />

<strong>Edmund</strong> <strong>Lewis</strong> re-conveyed t<strong>his</strong> property to <strong>his</strong> brother<br />

Thomas, the following month, for £250. Together with<br />

Hannah, <strong>his</strong> newly married wife, he conveyed to <strong>his</strong> eldest<br />

son John, for £19. 18s., " the east end <strong>of</strong> my Dwelling<br />

House, <strong>and</strong> one half my barn, <strong>and</strong> one half my salt marsh,<br />

wood <strong>and</strong> upl<strong>and</strong>," on Dec. 8, 1756 (Essex County Deeds,<br />

Vol. 178, 1 172). He died intestate, <strong>and</strong> Sept. 29, 1777,<br />

Samuel Ingalls was appointed administrator (Essex Co.<br />

Prob. Rec., file 16,745). The widow's dower was set <strong>of</strong>f<br />

to her by the court on May 4, 1779, viz-. : The west end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the dwelling house, the line running through the centre<br />

<strong>of</strong> the chimney, with a privilege to use the front <strong>and</strong> back<br />

doors, entry <strong>and</strong> stairs. The east end <strong>of</strong> the barn containing<br />

two Bays, <strong>and</strong> is 20 feet in length. 100 poles <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong>,<br />

on part <strong>of</strong> which the dwelling house st<strong>and</strong>s, the east line<br />

running through the centre <strong>of</strong> the chimney. One acre, 96<br />

poles <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> in the field by the house. Seven acres, 136<br />

poles <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong>, part tillage, <strong>and</strong> part fresh meadow. Four<br />

acres <strong>of</strong> pasture l<strong>and</strong> near the house. Four acres <strong>of</strong><br />

woodl<strong>and</strong> laid out to John <strong>Lewis</strong> on town common, it<br />

being part <strong>of</strong> a ten acre lot, the total being appraised at<br />

£870. 6. 8.<br />

John <strong>Lewis</strong>, eldest son <strong>of</strong> said intestate, having received<br />

as advancement <strong>of</strong> <strong>his</strong> father certain real estate fully equal<br />

to a single share, <strong>his</strong> heirs desired that only one share be<br />

set <strong>of</strong>f to them. The estate was divided into seven lots,<br />

<strong>and</strong> apportioned to Jonathan Blaney <strong>Lewis</strong> (148), representative<br />

<strong>of</strong> Nathaniel <strong>Lewis</strong>, deceased, to Lydia Ingalls,<br />

Elizabeth Ingalls, Joseph <strong>Lewis</strong>, <strong>Edmund</strong> <strong>Lewis</strong>, Sarah<br />

Newhall, <strong>and</strong> to the legal representatives <strong>of</strong> John, the<br />

eldest son, deceased. The portions were each valued at<br />

£248. 13s. 4d.<br />

<strong>Edmund</strong> <strong>Lewis</strong> married, Jan. 8, 1723-4, Hepsebah,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Allen, 3d, <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth (Ballard) Breed <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Lynn</strong>. She was born June 19, 1697, <strong>and</strong> was buried Mar.<br />

15, 1756. He married, second, Nov. 25, 1756, Mrs. Han-
