681 Thomas Y. <strong>Lewis</strong>, born in Shelbyville, 111.,<br />

Feb. 20, 1837, adopted the Y. in <strong>his</strong> name while a medical<br />

student at Louisville, Ky., to prevent another Thomas<br />

<strong>Lewis</strong> from receiving <strong>his</strong> mail. He graduated at the Kentucky<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Medicine, Feb. 28, 1858, <strong>and</strong> practiced <strong>his</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession at Sullivan, 111., until 1881, when he removed to<br />

Dublin, Texas. He was Superintendent <strong>of</strong> Schools <strong>of</strong><br />

Moultrie County, 111., 1865-1869, <strong>and</strong> alderman at Sullivan,<br />

111., <strong>and</strong> at Dublin, Texas; also President <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> School Trustees <strong>and</strong> President <strong>of</strong> the National<br />

Bank <strong>of</strong> Dublin, Texas, upon its organization. He has in
