472 William Martin <strong>Lewis</strong>, born in Bridgewater,<br />

N. H., Aug. 29, 1798. Was the founder <strong>of</strong> Gainesville,<br />

Ala., to which he donated a church <strong>and</strong> a seminary. He<br />

was a merchant <strong>and</strong> dealer in real estate, an elder <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Presbyterian church, <strong>and</strong> a man <strong>of</strong> wealth up to the time<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Civil War, which greatly depreciated the value <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>his</strong> property in the South. He died at Gainesville, Ala.,<br />

Feb. 13, 1881. He married, first, Sept. 25, 1828, Mary<br />

Bartlett, born at Bristol, N.H., in 1802, <strong>and</strong> died at Springfield,<br />

Ala., May 28, 1831, daughter <strong>of</strong> Ichabod <strong>and</strong> Ann<br />

Bartlett. He married, second, May 2, 1836, at Columbus,<br />

Miss., Aurelia Hiley Axtell, born at Windsor, Mass., Oct.<br />

6, 1811, <strong>and</strong> died at Gainesville, Ala., July 15, 1865,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Sylvester <strong>and</strong> Hiley Axtell <strong>of</strong> Windsor, Mass.<br />

Child <strong>of</strong> William M. <strong>and</strong> Mary, born in Gainesville,<br />

Ala.<br />

(Guthrie) Converse. He lives at Highwood, N. J. Children;<br />

d. July 29, 1865. (2) Clarence Conyers, b. in Brooklyn, N. Y.,<br />

Feb. 12, 1867. An author <strong>and</strong> humorous writer.
