till the follow<strong>in</strong>g spr<strong>in</strong>g. Dur<strong>in</strong>g that summer a third<br />

fortification was erected <strong>in</strong> the town <strong>of</strong> Adams, beyond<br />

Hoosack mounta<strong>in</strong>, and named Fort <strong>Massachusetts</strong>. This<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ished the l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> defenses ordered and paid for by the<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. Other means <strong>of</strong> safety were adopted, and houses<br />

were fortified and mounts built <strong>in</strong> Vernon, Bernardston,<br />

Colra<strong>in</strong>, Charlemont and Charlestown. West <strong>of</strong> the mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

similar works were constructed at Pittsfield, Stockbridge,<br />

and Sheffield. These were built, some at private<br />

cost, and others by the towns <strong>in</strong> which they were sit-<br />

uated. Generally the town fortifications were used as<br />

places <strong>of</strong> refuge for the <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>in</strong> times <strong>of</strong> sudden<br />

assault. In cases <strong>of</strong> imm<strong>in</strong>ent danger they were garrisoned<br />

by the Prov<strong>in</strong>ce troops or volunteers paid by the government.<br />

He also had charge <strong>of</strong> the frontier defenses. Capt. Ephraim<br />

Williams <strong>of</strong> Hatfield, was entrusted with the oversight<br />

<strong>of</strong> the western l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> fortifications, with headquar-<br />

ters at Fort <strong>Massachusetts</strong>, and Major Israel Williams <strong>of</strong><br />

Hatfield, was appo<strong>in</strong>ted commissary <strong>of</strong> the Western Department.<br />

Soldiers and Dogs<br />

to be scut to the western frontiers. Con-<br />

stant scout<strong>in</strong>g was carried on <strong>from</strong> the forts,<br />

under the supervision <strong>of</strong> Capt. Williams. Dogs were<br />

pressed <strong>in</strong>to the service, and accompanied many <strong>of</strong> the<br />

scout<strong>in</strong>g parties, but evidently they did not accomplish all<br />

that was anticipated. Abundant signs <strong>of</strong> the enemy were<br />

discovered, but no collision occurred, and no assault was<br />

made by the Indians <strong>in</strong> this section. It is not known that<br />

any <strong>Northampton</strong> men were engaged <strong>in</strong> this campaign.<br />

Undoubtedly some <strong>of</strong> them enlisted, and were employed <strong>in</strong><br />

the duties already named, but no company <strong>from</strong> this town<br />

appears among the muster-rolls. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the year both<br />

sides were engaged <strong>in</strong> preparations for the conflict. The<br />

burden <strong>of</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g the fortifications and scout<strong>in</strong>g fell upon
