Tliey also broke <strong>in</strong>to the liouse <strong>of</strong> Col, Woodbridge, ransacked<br />

it, and took many articles <strong>from</strong> other houses <strong>in</strong> the<br />

neighborhood. Every house they entered was stripped <strong>of</strong><br />

provisions and much valuable property was destroyed.<br />

Shays tried to prevent this lawlessness, but without avail.<br />

After reach<strong>in</strong>g South Hadley, Shays and his party turned<br />

eastward to Moody's Corner, and crossed by the notch <strong>in</strong><br />

the mounta<strong>in</strong> to Amherst, where they arrived about eight<br />

o'clock Saturday night.<br />

Movements <strong>of</strong> Gen. On the 22'\ Geu. Liucolu and his army<br />

L<strong>in</strong>coln. arrived at Worcester, and his troops<br />

reached Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield on Friday and Satur-<br />

day, Jan. 26*'' and 27*''. On Saturday he marched aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

Day at West Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, cross<strong>in</strong>g the river on the ice, Gen.<br />

Shepherd hav<strong>in</strong>g been ordered up the east side <strong>of</strong> the river<br />

to prevent the junction <strong>of</strong> Day and Shays. Upon the appearance<br />

<strong>of</strong> L<strong>in</strong>coln's forces, the <strong>in</strong>surgents under Day fled ~X- (<br />

without fir<strong>in</strong>g a shot. Many <strong>of</strong> them threw away their<br />

arms and accoutrements, and <strong>in</strong> their haste forgot to take<br />

the provisions that were be<strong>in</strong>g cooked for them <strong>in</strong> the<br />

houses <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>habitants. Day's men sped to the<br />

north through Southampton. About two hundred fifty <strong>of</strong><br />

them arrived <strong>in</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong> the same even<strong>in</strong>g and took<br />

possession <strong>of</strong> the houses on South Street. On Sunday<br />

afternoon they crossed the river to Hadley, passed through ^ '^y?<br />

Hadley street, and jo<strong>in</strong>ed Shays <strong>in</strong> Amherst.
