When the first company <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ute-men was enlisted <strong>in</strong><br />

In it he counsels firmness, obedience, courage<br />

and patriotism, urg<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>of</strong>iciency <strong>in</strong> drill, and he suggests<br />

Religious Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. Major Hawley was a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

been generally acknowledged ;<br />

it is not so well known, that<br />

on every topic <strong>of</strong> discussion, his voice was <strong>in</strong>variably<br />

raised, as <strong>in</strong> defence <strong>of</strong> the bereaved and oppressed ;<br />

so also<br />

<strong>in</strong> favor <strong>of</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g that could advance civil or religious<br />

freedom. He liad the true <strong>in</strong>st<strong>in</strong>ct <strong>of</strong> liberty, and while<br />
