SELECTION AND SETTLEMENT OF A NEW MINISTER.<br />

Advice Sought about The preciiict, on the 29"' <strong>of</strong> June, 1750,<br />

a New M<strong>in</strong>ister. took measures to supply the pulpit, <strong>in</strong>-<br />

struct<strong>in</strong>g the committee appo<strong>in</strong>ted for<br />

that purpose to apply to the neighbor<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>isters and<br />

solicit their advice respect<strong>in</strong>g some " suitable gentleman to<br />

preach here on probation." Mr. Edwards was <strong>in</strong>vited to<br />

preach the next Sabbath, and the church was desired to<br />

"appo<strong>in</strong>t a day <strong>of</strong> solemn fast<strong>in</strong>g and prayer to God for<br />

his direction and bless<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> seek<strong>in</strong>g a gentleman to settle<br />

here <strong>in</strong> the work <strong>of</strong> the Gospel M<strong>in</strong>istry."<br />

An Illiberal Act.<br />

A controversy arose with Mr. Edwards the<br />

next month, respect<strong>in</strong>g the use <strong>of</strong> the se-<br />

questered land. Apparently the custom had been to rent<br />

one half <strong>of</strong> it, and give the m<strong>in</strong>ister the use <strong>of</strong> the rest.<br />

In 1750, the year <strong>of</strong> his dismissal, Mr. Edwards claimed the<br />

usual privilege. But although the year was already half<br />

completed, the prec<strong>in</strong>ct refused to grant him the use <strong>of</strong> any<br />

<strong>of</strong> the land.<br />

sioned by such extraord<strong>in</strong>ary meet<strong>in</strong>gs." From October 9,<br />

1749, to November 19, 1750, no less than twenty prec<strong>in</strong>ct<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>gs had been held, as well as a large number <strong>of</strong><br />

church gather<strong>in</strong>gs, for all <strong>of</strong> which Daniel Sheldon had to<br />

r<strong>in</strong>g the bell.
