The Representative Sensible <strong>in</strong>structions to their representative<br />

Instructed. wQve also adopted. He was " Directed to<br />

use his Influence at the General Court <strong>in</strong><br />

their next session to get a revision <strong>of</strong> the present fee bill,<br />

and that all Grants <strong>of</strong> the General Court <strong>in</strong> future should<br />

be made with Prudence and Good oeconomy." Dr. Ebene-<br />

zer Hunt and Benjam<strong>in</strong> Sheldon were chosen representatives<br />

that year, but it was considered "Good oeconomy"<br />

that but one <strong>of</strong> them should attend at a time, and a vote to<br />

that effect was passed.<br />

The Town Provides 111 respouse to ail article <strong>in</strong> the warrant<br />

for <strong>its</strong> Safety. "To See whether the Town will take any<br />

measures for their mutual safety <strong>in</strong> this<br />

time <strong>of</strong> anarchy and confusion," it was voted "that the<br />

keeper <strong>of</strong> the Town stock <strong>of</strong> ammunition should be Di-<br />

rected to Deliver out <strong>of</strong> the s'd Stock to each man that<br />

shall appear to Support the Supreme Judicial Court on<br />

Monday next, Half a Pound <strong>of</strong> Powder and a Proportional<br />

quantity <strong>of</strong> Ball." This vote was passed <strong>in</strong> September,<br />

and had reference to the militia ordered out to protect the<br />

court at Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, under Gen. Shepherd. A company<br />

was enlisted <strong>in</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>, and was <strong>in</strong> the service. ^ In<br />

November a vote was passed to pay for the two barrels <strong>of</strong><br />

beef "supplied by Capt. Allen to the militia that went to<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield <strong>in</strong> September last."<br />

A <strong>Northampton</strong> A compaiiy <strong>of</strong> seveiity-three men enlisted<br />

Company. j^ <strong>Northampton</strong> early <strong>in</strong> 1787, and commanded<br />

by Capt. Hezekiah Russell, jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

the forces under Gen. Shepherd at Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield. In compliance<br />

with the proclamation call<strong>in</strong>g out the troops, they were<br />

to serve for thirty days, but they received pay for only<br />

twenty-five days. From Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield they marched up the<br />

river to <strong>in</strong>tercept Day, and after the dispersion <strong>of</strong> the rebel<br />

forces, were stationed at Northfield.^<br />
