but very little liead way all that clay. It was a fair still<br />

afternoon.<br />

Tuesday the 16*^''. Some time before day there came up<br />

a breeze <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d at South, and <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g very fresh,<br />

but it was aga<strong>in</strong>st us and it was foggy. The fog cleared<br />

<strong>of</strong>f, the w<strong>in</strong>d came up very strong at S. W. It be<strong>in</strong>g contrary<br />

we turned <strong>in</strong>to Canso Harbor about 4 o'clock <strong>in</strong> the<br />

afternoon ; lay there that night. There was a shower <strong>of</strong><br />

ra<strong>in</strong> that afternoon. In the night it cleared <strong>of</strong>f. Strawberries<br />

were now ri]3e and very plenty at Canso.<br />

Wednesday, I?"'. This a fair morn<strong>in</strong>g, w<strong>in</strong>d N. N. W.<br />

a fresh breeze. About half an hour before the sun was up,<br />

we set sail out <strong>of</strong> Canso Harbor. Sailed all day with a<br />

small breeze, although some part <strong>of</strong> the day was contrary<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ds, we were obliged to tack. We met several vessels<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>from</strong> Boston, but spoke with none <strong>of</strong> them. I was<br />

not sea sick all day.<br />

Thursday, the IS"". This is a fair pleasant morn<strong>in</strong>g, but<br />

a small breeze <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d, at W. N, W, but <strong>in</strong> the afternoon<br />

came up a violent west w<strong>in</strong>d ahead all the afternoon, and<br />

<strong>in</strong> the night thunder and ra<strong>in</strong> and a violent w<strong>in</strong>d right<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st us, so that all we got was by tacks, and we beat a<br />

great way <strong>of</strong>f <strong>in</strong>to the sea out <strong>of</strong> our way. Sick all day,<br />

Friday, 19"'. All this forenoon a strong w<strong>in</strong>d ahead and<br />

ra<strong>in</strong> and all the way we made was by tack<strong>in</strong>g, and that<br />

is but very slow. Afternoon it cleared <strong>of</strong>f and the sun ap-<br />

peared, but still the w<strong>in</strong>d aga<strong>in</strong>st us, all day <strong>in</strong> a roll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sea, but little comfort up or down.<br />

Saturday, the 20"'. All last night a strong W, S, W.<br />

which was right ahead and heavy showers <strong>of</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>, some<br />

thunder. The w<strong>in</strong>d held strong ahead all day aga<strong>in</strong>st us<br />

and a roll<strong>in</strong>g sea, ra<strong>in</strong> and fog, I was not able to sit up<br />

this day, nor any appetite to eat and dr<strong>in</strong>k,<br />

Sunday, the 2V^. Last night a steady night's ra<strong>in</strong>, but<br />

little w<strong>in</strong>d, but what there was, was aga<strong>in</strong>st us. This<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g verj^ still and a steady ra<strong>in</strong>. Sometime <strong>in</strong> the<br />

forenoon it cleared up, w<strong>in</strong>d but a little, but what there<br />

was was W. and by N, so we made but little way that day.<br />

Monday, 22"'^ A still, fair, pleasant morn<strong>in</strong>g ; no w<strong>in</strong>d<br />

all last night ; this morn<strong>in</strong>g we lay to a fish<strong>in</strong>g and we<br />

caught them plentifully, although the water was about 510
