•assault upon Fort Ticonderoga, and Lord Howe was sla<strong>in</strong> ;<br />

while the third under Gen. Joseph Forbes and Col. George<br />

Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, overran the Ohio valley and captured Fort<br />

du Quesne. But there was a gleam <strong>of</strong> sunsh<strong>in</strong>e for Abercrombie.<br />

An expedition aga<strong>in</strong>st Fort Frontenac (K<strong>in</strong>gston)<br />

on the north side <strong>of</strong> Lake Ontario was entrusted to Col.<br />

Bradstreet <strong>of</strong> <strong>Massachusetts</strong>. With three thousand troops,<br />

mostly militia, he speedily took possession <strong>of</strong> the place.<br />

Many pieces <strong>of</strong> artillery, several armed vessels, and great<br />

•quantities <strong>of</strong> supplies fell <strong>in</strong>to the hands <strong>of</strong> the victors.<br />

This was a valuable acquisition, and <strong>its</strong> possession was <strong>of</strong><br />

material significance <strong>in</strong> the campaign <strong>of</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g year.<br />

Massacluisetts raised seven hundred men for this campaign,<br />

most <strong>of</strong> whom were under Gen. Abercrombie, who lost <strong>in</strong><br />

his unsuccessful attack on Ticonderoga nearly two thousand<br />

soldiers.<br />

The Hampshire Col. William Williams <strong>of</strong> Deerfield com-<br />

Regiment. mauded a regiment <strong>in</strong> Gen. Abercrombie's<br />

army. In it Capt. Elisha Pomeroy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong><br />

had a company <strong>of</strong> about one hundred men, upwards<br />

<strong>of</strong> forty <strong>of</strong> whom were <strong>from</strong> this town ; twentyseven<br />

<strong>from</strong> Hadley ; eight <strong>from</strong> Southampton ; four <strong>from</strong><br />

South Hadley ; eight <strong>from</strong> Westfield ; and eight <strong>from</strong><br />

other towns <strong>in</strong> the county. They were <strong>in</strong> the service <strong>from</strong><br />

April fourteenth to December fifth on the northern frontier.<br />

Capt. John Burk <strong>of</strong> Falltown commanded till June,<br />

Capt. Catl<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> Deerfield, <strong>from</strong> June to September, and<br />

Capt. Burk aga<strong>in</strong> till the end <strong>of</strong> November.<br />

The Indians get <strong>in</strong> Indian depredatious commenced early <strong>in</strong><br />

some Work. March, but much less damage resulted <strong>from</strong><br />

them than usual. Casualties occurred at<br />

Colra<strong>in</strong>, and at H<strong>in</strong>sdale, N. H. Several houses were<br />

burned and many cattle slaughtered. Fewer raids than<br />

usual were chronicled for this year, and none <strong>of</strong> them came<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the present lim<strong>its</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hampshire County.<br />
