on K<strong>in</strong>g Street, a short distance south <strong>of</strong> the okl Catholic<br />

Churcli. The above list comprises all that were built <strong>in</strong><br />

what was designated as the " remote parts <strong>of</strong> the town."<br />

Mounts Erected near Another Committee was chosen at the<br />

the Center. samc time to ''build some mounts <strong>in</strong> the<br />

body <strong>of</strong> the town." They had complete<br />

control <strong>of</strong> the work, both as regards location and erection,<br />

but seem to have followed <strong>in</strong> regard to position, the sug-<br />

gestions <strong>of</strong> the first committee, and placed them with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

lim<strong>its</strong> assigned to the proposed squadrons. Under their<br />

direction mounts were established at the follow<strong>in</strong>g places :<br />

at Mr. Stoddard's house on Prospect Street, now H. R.<br />

H<strong>in</strong>ckley's ; two near Joseph Bartlett's house, <strong>in</strong> the vic<strong>in</strong>ity<br />

<strong>of</strong> the residence <strong>of</strong> the late Wm. R. Clapp, on Pleasant<br />

Street ; another at Capt. Preserved Clapp's on Pleasant<br />

Street, near the junction <strong>of</strong> River Street ; one at Rev, Jonathan<br />

Edwards' homestead on K<strong>in</strong>g Street, now the prop-<br />

erty <strong>of</strong> Chas, E. Stevens ; another at the house <strong>of</strong> Lieut.<br />

Parsons, on Bridge Street, near the homestead <strong>of</strong> John W.<br />

Hubbard ; one at Capt. Joseph Wright's, on Bridge Street,<br />

on the homestead <strong>of</strong> the late J. S. Lathrop. Similar structures<br />

were also built at Ebenezer Wright's, on Bridge Street,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> the house <strong>of</strong> the late James Wright, and<br />

at John Miller's on K<strong>in</strong>g Street, not far <strong>from</strong> the house <strong>of</strong><br />

the late Geo. L. Loomis, but for some reason the town refused<br />

to pay for them, probably because they were built<br />

without the sanction <strong>of</strong> the committee. To build the fortifications<br />

<strong>in</strong> the outer districts, committees were appo<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> persons liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> that immediate vic<strong>in</strong>ity. In<br />

the body <strong>of</strong> the town the work was done by the general<br />

committee, or by persons appo<strong>in</strong>ted by them. The old fort<br />

at Pascommuck, which had already susta<strong>in</strong>ed one Indian<br />

attack, was put <strong>in</strong> complete repair.<br />

the town treasury, comprise all the work<br />

accomplished <strong>in</strong> that l<strong>in</strong>e dur<strong>in</strong>g the war. They cost about<br />

£360, which <strong>in</strong>cludes charges for wood consumed by the<br />

soldiers who kept the "court <strong>of</strong> guard,'' and the pay <strong>of</strong> the
