recognized <strong>in</strong> the sum <strong>of</strong> £100 each, to appear as witnesses.<br />

Lyman was tried at that time and acquitted.<br />

Major Allen. The deceased was a most estimable man,<br />

<strong>in</strong>telligent, ardent, brave and generous. He<br />

was by trade a carpenter and jo<strong>in</strong>er, and by reputation an<br />

excellent workman. He built the house <strong>of</strong> Dr. Hunt, and<br />

was employed <strong>in</strong> the erection <strong>of</strong> the second Court-House.<br />

Capta<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> the company <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ute-men, he led his command<br />

to the front when the war opened. He was at work<br />

rebuild<strong>in</strong>g the barn <strong>of</strong> Joel Hunt, then recently burned,<br />

when the bells were rung and the guns fired announc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the battle <strong>of</strong> Lex<strong>in</strong>gton. With his men he dropped everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

when the alarm sounded, "they went over the fences<br />

like deer," and were soon ready for Boston. Rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

the service, he was <strong>in</strong> the army under Gen. Wash<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />

was promoted for honorable service, and left an enviable<br />

record for courage and efficiency. He married Sarah Miller<br />

<strong>of</strong> Farm<strong>in</strong>gton, but left no children. He was a direct descendant<br />

<strong>of</strong> Samuel Allen <strong>of</strong> W<strong>in</strong>dsor, whose son Samuel<br />

was one <strong>of</strong> the early settlers <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>.
