Three <strong>Northampton</strong> While tliis commission was Carry<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>its</strong><br />

Men Drowned. work, a large scout<strong>in</strong>g party was dispatched<br />

towards the frontiers <strong>of</strong> Canada, under<br />

Oapt. Thomas Wells <strong>of</strong> Deerfield. On their return, on the<br />

24"' <strong>of</strong> April, a canoe, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Lieut. Joseph Clesson,<br />

Samuel Hannum, Simeon Pomeroy, Thomas Alexander and<br />

Noah Allen, while cross<strong>in</strong>g the Connecticut, was upset near<br />

the mouth <strong>of</strong> Miller's River, and Pomeroy, Alexander and<br />

Allen, all soldiers <strong>from</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>, were drowned.<br />

Simeon Pomeroy was the son <strong>of</strong> Ebenezer Pomeroy (grandson<br />

<strong>of</strong> Medad), and twenty-two years <strong>of</strong> age ; Thomas<br />

Alexander was the son <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel Alexander and was<br />

twenty-eight years old ; and Noah Allen was the son <strong>of</strong><br />

Joseph Allen, about twenty-one years <strong>of</strong> age. This was<br />

the most serious loss that befell <strong>Northampton</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

war.<br />

In November, Ebenezer Pomeroy, Samuel Allen, Joseph<br />

Clesson, Samuel Hannum, and Nathaniel Alexander, peti-<br />

tioned <strong>in</strong> behalf <strong>of</strong> themselves and relatives <strong>in</strong> the service<br />

as volunteers, for pay for clothes, guns, blankets, etc., lost<br />

at this time. Capt. Pomeroy was allowed 90s. ; Lieut.<br />

Joseph Clesson, £8.5.0; Samuel Allen, 80s. ; Samuel Hannum,<br />

80s. ; Nathaniel Alexander, £5. Alexander represented<br />

that he had spent a great part <strong>of</strong> his life <strong>in</strong> service<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st the Indian enemy, was now old, and his son<br />

Thomas was drowned under Capt. Wells.<br />

Gray Lock and his The uoted cliief Gray Lock was quite con-<br />

^o""*- spicuous dur<strong>in</strong>g this war. Not only was the<br />

first attack <strong>in</strong> this county attributed to him,<br />

but to his tribe were charged many <strong>of</strong> the atrocities committed<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>its</strong> borders. Hav<strong>in</strong>g formerly lived at Warranoak,<br />

or on the Westfield River, he was familiar with<br />

this entire section <strong>of</strong> country, and was able to accomplish<br />

much mischief. Several attempts were made to conciliate<br />

him, but without result. His headquarters were at Missisquoi<br />

Bay, with<strong>in</strong> the borders <strong>of</strong> Canada, where he had a
