left <strong>in</strong> ignorance <strong>of</strong> the fact. Mary Pomeroy <strong>in</strong> a letter to<br />

her lnisl)and. dated May 27"', says :<br />

"The whole town is much moved with concern for the expedition,<br />

how Providence will order the affair, for which religious meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

every week <strong>in</strong> town are ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed." Under date <strong>of</strong> June 11"', Ebenezer<br />

Pomeroy, father <strong>of</strong> Major Seth, writes : — "I would <strong>in</strong>form you<br />

and j'our soldiers that God <strong>in</strong> his Providence has stirred up a remarkable<br />

spirit <strong>of</strong> prayer <strong>in</strong> this city, for victory <strong>in</strong> this grand expedition and<br />

I hear also throughout the land, for <strong>in</strong> this town the parents and some<br />

other relatives <strong>of</strong> those gone <strong>in</strong> the expedition, have constantly set<br />

apart some time every week to pray to God for success <strong>in</strong> this grand<br />

affair and we have good reason to believe that it hath not been <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong> ;<br />

for God hath <strong>in</strong> a very remarkable manner smiled upon the fleet and<br />

army."<br />

Major Pomeroy's The Company <strong>of</strong> Major Pomeroy was<br />

Company. crowded <strong>in</strong>to the small fish<strong>in</strong>g vessels, n<strong>in</strong>e-<br />

ty <strong>of</strong> which were required to transport the<br />

troops. On the 24"' <strong>of</strong> March, the fleet set sail <strong>from</strong> Nan-<br />

tasket roads and soon encountered a severe storm, with the<br />

usual consequences to landsmen. But though they weathered<br />

the storm <strong>in</strong> safety, the fleet was scattered. After<br />

buffet<strong>in</strong>g the waves for nearly two weeks, narrowly escap<strong>in</strong>g<br />

shipwreck, the little vessels conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the Hampshire<br />

soldiers entered the harbor <strong>of</strong> Canseau, about fifty miles<br />

<strong>from</strong> Louisburg, where they found a number <strong>of</strong> transports<br />

belong<strong>in</strong>g to the expedition, at anchor. Here <strong>in</strong> a few<br />

days the entire fleet was concentrated, and here it was com-<br />

pelled to rema<strong>in</strong> till the last <strong>of</strong> April, wait<strong>in</strong>g for the ice<br />

to break up <strong>in</strong> the harbor <strong>of</strong> Louisburg.<br />

first home letter, dated April 6"', gives the<br />

annexed account, by which it will be seen that the major,<br />

whatever may have been the case with the soldiers, had a<br />

very severe attack <strong>of</strong> seasickness : —<br />

"Yesterday arrived safe at camp, which was the 14"' day s<strong>in</strong>ce we<br />

embarked and 13 <strong>of</strong> the days sea sick <strong>in</strong> the highest degree, 24 hours<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten without one mouthful <strong>of</strong> meat. * * * All strong dr<strong>in</strong>k, the<br />

smell <strong>of</strong> which was more than I could bear, was an abom<strong>in</strong>ation to me,<br />

and if any body ever died with sea sickness I believe I should if it had<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued a little while longer. We are now <strong>in</strong> a good harbour and I
