"Wednesday Jan. 15, 1777.<br />

"Then I set out <strong>from</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong> to follow my regiment that was<br />

gone forward on their way to Danbury, <strong>in</strong> company with^the ReV* Mr.<br />

Porter, Chapla<strong>in</strong> for my regiment. Came to my sons at Whiteloaf<br />

[Southampton] and d<strong>in</strong>ed there. After d<strong>in</strong>ner Deacon Lyman and his<br />

son Noah who was my waiter and Mr. Porter went <strong>of</strong>f. Came that day<br />

to Mr. Barbank's, lodged there, the next day set <strong>of</strong>f. Came to Simsbury<br />

there d<strong>in</strong>ed, after set <strong>of</strong>f and came to the west part <strong>of</strong> Simsbury,<br />

lodged near the edge <strong>of</strong> New Hartford, the men's names I have forgot-<br />

ten. Set <strong>of</strong>f next day, went through Litchfield, came at night to a tavern,<br />

the place and the man's name I have forgotten, but the next day<br />

we came to Danbury. Saturday night the 18"' Noah Lyman my waiter<br />

was taken sick, we stayed there over the Sabbath heard Mr. Bradford<br />

preach <strong>from</strong> these words "I will have mercy on those I will have<br />

mercy."' A better preacher I don't know that I ever heard. Mr. Porter<br />

and I left Danbury Monday morn<strong>in</strong>g, that day came to a place Cram<br />

Pond, lodged there (I had paid before I left Dea. Lyman at Danbury,<br />

six shill<strong>in</strong>gs more than my part with him).<br />

" Tuesday came to Peekskill, the same day rode for K<strong>in</strong>g's Bridge,<br />

Col. Williams with me to settle a difficulty that had taken place <strong>in</strong> the<br />

regiment before I left, got that settled, came to Peekskill.<br />

"Saturday, 25">, d<strong>in</strong>ed with Gen. McDougal.<br />

"Monday 37"" Daniel Strong was hanged for tak<strong>in</strong>g orders to raise<br />

a company <strong>of</strong> volunteers under that <strong>in</strong>famous Rogers to jo<strong>in</strong> Gen.<br />

Howe's army <strong>in</strong> New York, the Rev. Mr. Sackett <strong>of</strong> Cram Pond stood<br />

on the cart and prayed and preached an excellent sermon <strong>from</strong> these<br />

words "Prepare to meet thy God, Oh Israel." The whole army<br />

paraded <strong>in</strong> a circle. Gen. McDougal on horseback, the colonel on horseback,<br />

the whole army <strong>in</strong> a circle rotmd the gallows to hear the sermon,<br />

and behold the melancholy spectacle.<br />

" The first three nights after 1 got to Peekskill I lodged at one Man-<br />

deville's, paid him by the meal. The 28"' <strong>of</strong> January I took lodg<strong>in</strong>gs at<br />

Capt. Johnson's, agreed with Miss Johnson (the Capt. not at home) for<br />

two dollars and a half per week for my board, stayed there till<br />

The above is the last entry Gen. Pomeroy made <strong>in</strong> his<br />

journal. One <strong>of</strong> his last letters, written but a week before<br />

his death, closes with these words : —<br />

" I go on cheerfully for I am sure the cause we are engaged <strong>in</strong> is just,<br />

and the call I have to it is clear, and the call <strong>of</strong> God. With that<br />

assurance, who could not go on cheerfully, and confront every danger."<br />

His Death. With<strong>in</strong> four weeks after leav<strong>in</strong>g home he<br />

was taken violently ill with pleurisy and<br />

died on the 19*'' <strong>of</strong> February <strong>in</strong> his seventy-first year. He<br />

was greatly esteemed by the <strong>of</strong>ficers under the command <strong>of</strong><br />

Gen. McDougal, and was buried by them with military<br />
