polls and estates. All who belonged to Capt. Allen's and<br />

Capt. Chap<strong>in</strong>'s companies the last year, who should enlist<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental service, were to have "full compensation<br />

for all loss by them susta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> cloathes and other<br />

articles, where such losses were unavoidable, and not<br />

through the Negligence <strong>of</strong> those who susta<strong>in</strong>ed them."<br />

British Prisoners Several <strong>of</strong> tlic British mar<strong>in</strong>es, prisoners<br />

Enlist<strong>in</strong>g. here, enlisted <strong>in</strong> the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental army. To<br />

them the town voted a bounty <strong>of</strong> £10 per<br />

year for three years. Robert Keel<strong>in</strong>g and Giles Jones, and<br />

probably John Meacham, were among the prisoners who<br />

enlisted<br />

1779. There was a misunderstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

reference to the time for which they had enlisted. Major<br />

Hawley and other <strong>in</strong>fluential citizens persuaded them to<br />

return, and sent a letter <strong>in</strong> their behalf to the authorities.<br />

Seth Lyman Jr. and John Welch refused to return to<br />

camp, and led, it was supposed, a vagabond and plunder<strong>in</strong>g<br />

life. Seth Lyman justified his son <strong>in</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g home, and<br />

this led to hard feel<strong>in</strong>gs between him and Major Allen.<br />

The <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> the first company <strong>of</strong> Cont<strong>in</strong>entals were<br />

Major Jonathan Allen, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>, who commanded<br />

the first company <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ute-men ; Capt., Nathan Goodale<br />

<strong>of</strong> Brookfield ; Lieut., Elihu Root <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>; and<br />

Ens., John Blake <strong>of</strong> Wrentham.<br />

Pay Voted to the In March, a committee was appo<strong>in</strong>ted to resoidiers.<br />

port del<strong>in</strong>quents <strong>in</strong> the service, and assess<br />

their proportion. At the same time it was<br />

voted that the pay <strong>of</strong> all who served with Arnold at<br />

Quebec, and those who went to Canada under Capt. Chap<strong>in</strong>,<br />

should be estimated at 30s. per month ; those who did garrison<br />

duty at Dorchester, under Capt. Oliver Lyman,<br />

should be allowed 5s. per month ; and that the rema<strong>in</strong>der<br />

should be computed at 24s. per month. These sums were<br />

<strong>in</strong> addition to the amount received <strong>from</strong> the government.<br />
