number <strong>of</strong> swivels and other cruel <strong>in</strong>struments <strong>of</strong> death.<br />

The walls <strong>of</strong> the city are upon the land side, one about 25<br />

feet high and about 4 rods thick, with<strong>in</strong> the walls are near<br />

100 acres <strong>of</strong> land ; the walls are near two miles around<br />

the city.<br />

Friday, July 12*''. This is a fair pleasant day, warm but<br />

not hot. F<strong>in</strong>ished all my bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> Louisburg, d<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

with the General and some other gentlemen. The d<strong>in</strong>ner<br />

was very good, cider and w<strong>in</strong>e plenty ; first a good plum<br />

pudd<strong>in</strong>g, boiled pork, beef, herbs, two large fat roast<br />

pigs and salmon and boiled butter plenty. After d<strong>in</strong>ner<br />

took leave <strong>of</strong> all the gentlemen and went on board Mr.<br />

Bastard's Amplus Eng<strong>in</strong>eers sloop, Capt. Donnel, Master.<br />

It be<strong>in</strong>g calm we lay <strong>in</strong> the harbour that night.<br />

Saturday, the 13"'. A strong S. W. w<strong>in</strong>d which was<br />

directly aga<strong>in</strong>st us, so we were not able to sail that night,<br />

so we lay <strong>in</strong> the harbour all day wait<strong>in</strong>g for a w<strong>in</strong>d that<br />

suited to sail. It was a fair day.<br />

Sabbath day, the 14*". Last night it ra<strong>in</strong>ed w<strong>in</strong>d S. W. ;<br />

this morn<strong>in</strong>g misty and some ra<strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g to sail, w<strong>in</strong>d<br />

IST. E., first a small breeze. We sailed by the Island Battery<br />

about 7 <strong>of</strong> the clock with a fresh breeze <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

About 9 it all died away. We lay roll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a calm all that<br />

day and night till about 11 and 12 o'clock <strong>in</strong> the night and<br />

then a small breeze till 3 or 4 <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g and then died<br />

away to a dead calm. I was sea sick all the first day, noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to eat or dr<strong>in</strong>k, with any appetite or that I could keep<br />

down.<br />

Monday, the 15*'', A dead calm this morn<strong>in</strong>g, with some<br />

showers as yesterday. Not so sick this morn<strong>in</strong>g. Eat a<br />

small matter and it kept down. About 9 <strong>of</strong> the clock this<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g we hailed a brig that came <strong>from</strong> <strong>Massachusetts</strong><br />

and we were <strong>in</strong>formed by her that they had the good news<br />

at Boston <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> Louisburg's be<strong>in</strong>g taken. We are<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed it was received with the greatest joy. It was<br />

early <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g, the 3'''' <strong>of</strong> July, which was commencement<br />

day, and the Governor ordered all the bells to be<br />

rung and guns to be fired. This day had a quarter <strong>of</strong> a<br />

good fat lamb roasted. I eat <strong>of</strong> it with some appetite. It<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g calm I was not so sick. Mild and calm all day and
