CONCLUSION<br />

The numbèr <strong>an</strong>d the quality <strong>of</strong> the <strong>errors</strong> <strong>made</strong><br />

in ngps<br />

are evidence that these are actually a source <strong>of</strong> serious<br />

difficulty for the <strong>students</strong> with whom we have worked. The<br />

statistical<br />

tests have shown that the incidence <strong>of</strong> wbt <strong>an</strong>d i rg<br />

<strong>errors</strong> in the face <strong>of</strong> a 1.1 the other types <strong>of</strong> <strong>errors</strong>, which have<br />

also been produced in the tr<strong>an</strong>slation <strong>of</strong> English ngps, is<br />

relev<strong>an</strong>t.<br />

These two types <strong>of</strong> <strong>errors</strong> as we have described them in chapter 5,<br />

are the ones which characterize those <strong>students</strong>' tendency to<br />

tr<strong>an</strong>sfer the usual sequence <strong>of</strong> the structural elements in a<br />

Portuguese ngp to some English ngps found in the texts tr<strong>an</strong>slated.<br />

The import<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> this tr<strong>an</strong>sference-* lies in the fact that the<br />

equivalent Portuguese<br />

ngps as rendered <strong>by</strong> those EL I <strong>students</strong><br />

are in complete interference with the message<br />

conveyed in the<br />

texts studied <strong>by</strong> both groups <strong>of</strong> <strong>students</strong>. It has become evident<br />

that <strong>students</strong> have not. achieved <strong>an</strong>y other kind <strong>of</strong> tr<strong>an</strong>slation 2<br />

which has not interfered with comprehension.<br />

Except for the tr<strong>an</strong>slation <strong>of</strong> A DUSTY ROOM (T9P) into<br />

'na poeira da sala', which has also shown the influence<br />

<strong>of</strong> the<br />

sequence <strong>of</strong> English structural elements, plus the insertion <strong>of</strong><br />

a r<strong>an</strong>kshifted group - 'de uma sala' - no other examples<br />

<strong>of</strong><br />

tr<strong>an</strong>sposition without interference with comprehension have<br />

been<br />

produced. 3 English ngps have posed difficulties to our EL I<br />

<strong>students</strong> in both specific <strong>an</strong>d non-specific types <strong>of</strong> texts. Errors<br />

such as the ones below have shown that the difficulty has<br />

been<br />

posed independent <strong>of</strong> the relation between the content <strong>of</strong> the
