RECOMMENDATIONS<br />

Some points need to be taken into consideration in<br />

face <strong>of</strong> the problems presented <strong>by</strong> the rendered tr<strong>an</strong>slations <strong>of</strong><br />

the ngps in the texts studied <strong>by</strong> those two groups. We know<br />

<strong>students</strong> are not forced to take English in their first<br />

that<br />

semester<br />

at the UFPB, however, one <strong>of</strong> the most probable motivating<br />

forces<br />

which makes most newly- admitted <strong>students</strong> take their EL I Course<br />

at the beginning <strong>of</strong> their undergraduation courses is the fact<br />

that they are generally required to read specific materials,<br />

written in English. We know that <strong>students</strong> are recommended to<br />

consult specific literature in English since the very beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> their academic life.- 2<br />

One might argue that <strong>students</strong> should take their EL I<br />

Course at <strong>an</strong>y other time after their immediate entr<strong>an</strong>ce at the<br />

UFPB; nevertheless, administrative reasons allow <strong>students</strong> to<br />

take English at <strong>an</strong>y time <strong>of</strong> their undergraduation<br />

course <strong>an</strong>d the<br />

DLEM c<strong>an</strong>not overlook the fact that most EL I <strong>students</strong> are taking<br />

their first semester at the UFPB <strong>an</strong>d, consequently,<br />

it might<br />

think <strong>of</strong> the appropriateness <strong>of</strong> the material to be laid down for<br />

that course. Texts dealing with subjects which were<br />

undoubtedly<br />

familiar to <strong>students</strong> might be one <strong>of</strong> the factors which<br />

would<br />

minimize the probable linguistic problems posed <strong>by</strong> the texts<br />

studied in EL I classes, <strong>an</strong>d, at the same time, texts <strong>of</strong> that<br />

kind might give the teacher the adv<strong>an</strong>tage <strong>of</strong> taking <strong>students</strong><br />

to<br />

look for me<strong>an</strong>ing beyond words.<br />

To apply texts whose content was familiar to <strong>students</strong><br />

might in fact minimize some difficulties <strong>an</strong>d facilitate <strong>students</strong>'
