urinary obstruction or to infection <strong>of</strong> the renal parenchyma or<br />

usually patchy in its distribution so that one finds diseased<br />

FAILURE<br />

The presentation <strong>of</strong> acute renal failure may occur<br />

in several ways; it may be deceptive <strong>an</strong>d subtle with ultimate<br />

awareness <strong>of</strong> the gravity <strong>of</strong> the situation <strong>by</strong> the<br />

physici<strong>an</strong><br />

precipitated <strong>by</strong> serious symptoms <strong>of</strong> uremia or evidence <strong>of</strong><br />

gross chemical der<strong>an</strong>gement; it may be immediately apparent <strong>by</strong><br />

<strong>an</strong> observed decrease in the urine output; or it may occur in<br />

a situation known to result in renal failure despite the best<br />

attempts at prevention. Acute renal failure in its broadest<br />

sense represents the relatively sudden inability <strong>of</strong> the kidneys<br />

to excrete the necessary amounts <strong>of</strong> water, salts<br />
