The preparation <strong>of</strong> our <strong>students</strong> for reading specific<br />

literature is one <strong>of</strong> the main purposes <strong>of</strong> the DLEM; it aims at<br />

providing <strong>students</strong> at <strong>an</strong>y academic level with the ability to<br />

read technical texts so that,they will be able to carry out<br />

their academic studies<br />

efficiently.<br />

Thus, the main point in <strong>an</strong> English L<strong>an</strong>guage I Course<br />

<strong>an</strong>d in <strong>an</strong>y ESP Course is to train <strong>students</strong> in reading skills.<br />

This common aspect has already been mentioned in this work:<br />

the<br />

reading <strong>of</strong> technical texts has been one <strong>of</strong> UFPB <strong>students</strong>' needs<br />

to be<br />

satisfied.<br />

In fact, the growth <strong>of</strong> the UFPB <strong>an</strong>d the necessity<br />

for<br />

keeping pace with all the developmental needs required <strong>by</strong> the<br />

society to supply the needs <strong>of</strong> this same society are the main<br />

factors which have led the UFPB not only to exp<strong>an</strong>d the<br />

number<br />

<strong>of</strong> courses <strong>of</strong>fered but also to improve<br />

the quality <strong>of</strong> those<br />

courses. ESP Courses have been the result <strong>of</strong> this development;<br />

we might also say that English L<strong>an</strong>guage I Courses were the first,<br />

step <strong>towards</strong> the provision <strong>of</strong> ESP Courses for the graduate <strong>an</strong>d<br />

post-graduate <strong>students</strong>. Nowadays the former have tried to<br />

reach<br />

the status <strong>of</strong> pre-ESP Courses on the assumption that our English<br />

L<strong>an</strong>guage I <strong>students</strong> will certainly feel the need to give continuity<br />

to their English lessons, since we all know that one semester<br />

<strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>an</strong>y foreign l<strong>an</strong>guage course is not sufficient to remedy all the<br />

deficiencies <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> the newly-admitted <strong>university</strong> <strong>students</strong>,<br />

in relation to their ability to read technical<br />

texts.<br />

It is the perform<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> our <strong>students</strong> in English<br />

L<strong>an</strong>guage Course I that may enable us to foresee the probable
