To <strong>an</strong>alyse<br />

the role which the sequence <strong>of</strong> the<br />

structural elements <strong>of</strong> English ngps has played in the tr<strong>an</strong>slation<br />

<strong>of</strong> texts applied to the Physics <strong>an</strong>d the Nursing Groups, it has<br />

been necessary to take into consideration the number <strong>of</strong> wbt <strong>an</strong>d<br />

i rg <strong>errors</strong> in relation to the other types which also<br />

occurred<br />

in the tr<strong>an</strong>slation <strong>of</strong><br />

ngps.<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> the first semester <strong>of</strong> 1979,<br />

i<br />

twenty-four<br />

'<br />

<strong>students</strong> <strong>of</strong> Physics had tr<strong>an</strong>siated° 12 specific texts;<br />

thirty-eight<br />

Nursing <strong>students</strong> had tr<strong>an</strong>slated 14 specific ones, in the same<br />

period. At the beginning <strong>of</strong> the semester both groups <strong>of</strong> <strong>students</strong><br />

tr<strong>an</strong>slated the same non-specific texts, which we have been<br />

referring to as TC. Thus, the specific texts applied to both<br />

groups <strong>of</strong> <strong>students</strong> were different but the two non-specific<br />

ones<br />

were the same, namely, EDUCATION<br />

IN BRAZIL (TIC) <strong>an</strong>d RACE AND<br />

HEREDITY<br />

(T2C).<br />

To verify whether the number <strong>of</strong> wbt <strong>an</strong>d i rg <strong>errors</strong> were<br />

statistically signific<strong>an</strong>t in relation to the other types <strong>of</strong> <strong>errors</strong><br />

which also occurred in ngps, the test <strong>of</strong> proportion 25 was applied<br />

to the two types <strong>of</strong> texts - specific <strong>an</strong>d non-specific<br />

ones;<br />

although the Physics <strong>students</strong> <strong>an</strong>d the Nursing ones have tr<strong>an</strong>slated<br />

the same two non-specific texts, we have decided to apply the<br />

text <strong>of</strong> proportion to the results obtained from each group <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>students</strong> separately, since we have been interested in verifying<br />

the signific<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> wbt <strong>an</strong>d i rg <strong>errors</strong> in the specific texts<br />

as well as in the non-sepcific ones in each group <strong>of</strong> <strong>students</strong>.
