^Translation is usually followed by other types
exercises, mainly objective ones, and it is amazing to see how
students manage to give correct answers (provided the tests are
to be answered in English but not in Portuguese); so far, the
conclusion most teachers have drawn from this fact is
students know how and where to find the answers in the
of
that
text,
even if some or most of them feel insecure as to the message
they have got from the text. Here, once more, one feels the
need
for more and other types of testing instruments to elucidate the
real
problems and difficulties; our students should not be
encouraged to find the answer in the text and simply re-copy
them in the spaces left in any exercise, or simply to pretend
that they are able to answer some questions, based on the text,
by re-copying whole sentences, or even clauses exactly as they
are in the text. Instead, some students are asked to provide
their answers in Portuguese so that teachers can better e.valuate
students' understanding of the text.
