within the structure and culture <strong>of</strong> Bengali <strong>middle</strong>-<strong>class</strong> community.<br />

The second chapter <strong>of</strong> analysis is on “Narratives <strong>of</strong> Female Homosocial Intimacy:<br />

Constructing and Negotiating Femininities”. Through exploring female homosocial<br />

intimate spaces, this chapter understands how women in these spaces <strong>of</strong> friendship<br />

confirm, challenge and resist the cultural mandates <strong>of</strong> womanhood and the cultural<br />

expectations <strong>of</strong> femininity. The chapter problematizes the category ‘woman’ by showing<br />

that women’s experiences and meanings <strong>of</strong> femininity are fragmented and contingent<br />

upon their specific material and cultural locations within the <strong>middle</strong>-<strong>class</strong>. Taking<br />

‘woman’ as a contextual analytic, the multi-layered dynamic <strong>of</strong> power relations is<br />

analyzed in relation to women’s <strong>narratives</strong> <strong>of</strong> a politics <strong>of</strong> difference.<br />

The third chapter is on “Narratives <strong>of</strong> Heterosexual Coupling: Negotiating Heteronormativity”.<br />

Through exploring intimate spaces <strong>of</strong> coupling, this chapter understands<br />

how subjects give meaning to courtship and conjugality and negotiate with<br />

institutionalized hetero-normativity in their everyday practices <strong>of</strong> intimate coupling. How<br />

these practices <strong>of</strong> coupling take shape within structural and cultural relations <strong>of</strong> family,<br />

<strong>class</strong>, gender and generation are explored. The power relations associated with<br />

subjects’ <strong>narratives</strong> <strong>of</strong> ‘traditional’, ‘modern’, ‘Indian’ and ‘Western’ notions <strong>of</strong> intimacy<br />

are also critically interrogated.<br />

The fourth chapter <strong>of</strong> analysis is on “Expressions <strong>of</strong> Heterosexual Intimacy: Negotiating<br />

the Bhadralok Distinction”. By exploring <strong>urban</strong> <strong>middle</strong>-<strong>class</strong> distinction <strong>of</strong> expressions <strong>of</strong><br />

heterosexual intimacy, this chapter understands how intimate expressions are culturally<br />
