ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This study was originally conceived by David Armstrong and some of the
participants of the 1982 North Aleutian Shelf synthesis meetings.
NOAA/NOS scientists including Lyman Thorsteinson and Steven Zimmerman
further defined the research needs that led to this program. Allan
Vogel was principal investigator for the plankton component, Paul
Fishman was principal investigator for the epibenthic and fisheries
component, and David Armstrong was a co-investigator on all aspects of
the species biology. Gregory McMurray was responsible for the ancillary
physical data and overall project management. Discussions between the
authors and with NOAA/NOS advisors Lyman Thorsteinson and Jawed Hameedi
brought the project to its final scope and content. Discussions with
Robert Cimberg, VTN, who worked in Izembek Lagoon during 1982, and
Murray Hayes and Bob Otto, National Marine Fisheries Service, were also
helpful for sampling strategy.-
Field work for this project was performed aboard the NOAA ship Miller
Freeman; the efforts of its officers and crew are gratefully acknowledged.
Particular thanks are expressed for the efforts of: Cdr.
Michael Fleming and Lt. Cdr. Ronald Sellers; Laison Lts. Craig Berg, Jim
Conrad and Lew Consiglieri; Chief Boatswain Bud Gerds; Lead Fishermen
Rick Petrusiak and Doug Lemire; and Survey Technicians Gary Shigenaka
and Robin Meyer. Lt. Joe Talbot, U.S. Coast Guard, was very helpful in
expediting logistics. George Lapiene of OCSEAP assisted with ship and
equipment logistics.
Thanks are also due to the additional members of the scientific crew who
performed the field work. The following volunteers and conscripts
assisted field sampling: Anamaria Escofet, Chris Rogers and Peggy
Russell (University of Washington); Rich Hevner and Tom Moylan (Clatsop
Community College); Peter Hagen (Pacific International Halibut Commission);
Steven Jewett (University of Alaska at Fairbanks); Tom Shirley
