21% of the 1976 tows (Feder 1978). Crangon communis is abundant where<br />

P<strong>and</strong>alus borealis <strong>and</strong> P<strong>and</strong>alopsis dispar are found (Butler 1980), <strong>and</strong> is<br />

commonly found on mixed mud <strong>and</strong> s<strong>and</strong> bottoms at depths of 62-95 m <strong>and</strong> temperatures<br />

of 0.5-3.6°C (McLaughlin 1963).<br />

Population estimates of crangonids<br />

in the southeastern Bering Sea have not been made. Estimates made<br />

from trawl surveys in Grays Harbor, Washington, were as high as 38,million<br />

shrimp for the bay during summer months, <strong>and</strong> even this figure was<br />

thought to be low because of gear inefficiency (Hoeman <strong>and</strong> Armstrong<br />

1981). Crangonid populations in the Bering Sea may be substantial.<br />

Their ecological <strong>and</strong> community role both as detrital processors (Rice<br />

1981) <strong>and</strong> predators, <strong>and</strong> as prey for commercial fish <strong>and</strong> crustaceans make<br />

them an important group to consider in scenarios of oil impact.<br />

Larval descriptions are complete for 3 species; C. dalli (Makarov<br />

1966), C. alaskensis (Lovel<strong>and</strong> 1968) <strong>and</strong> A. dentata (Squires 1965).<br />

Five larval stages <strong>and</strong> one megalops are known for C. dalli <strong>and</strong> C. alaskensis,<br />

while A. dentata had only 2 zoeae before the post-larval stage <strong>and</strong><br />

Sclerocrangon boreas undergoes direct development in which larvae hatch<br />

as juveniles (Table 6.3).<br />

No information appears in the literature describing<br />

the reproductive biology of these species in the southeastern<br />

Bering Sea.<br />

Allen (1960) reported that hatching occurs from May through<br />

August in Crangon dalli from North Sea stocks.<br />

On the Kamchatkan shelf,<br />

Makarov (1967) noted that argids hatched from May to the end of June.<br />

6.5 Penaeidae<br />

Among the plankton collected in the southeastern Bering Sea <strong>and</strong><br />

sorted in our project is a series of four larval stages from a very<br />
