1963, 1969). Further, Russian scientists rarely find it in large numbers<br />

north of the Anadyr faunistic barrier (a line from the Anadyr River<br />

to St. Matthew Isl<strong>and</strong>), in marked contrast to the blue king crab which<br />

ranges farther north <strong>and</strong> seems to inhabit colder water (Slizkin 1973).<br />

In the southeastern Bering Sea where a major fishery is centered,<br />

red king crab are distributed somewhat in accord with sex <strong>and</strong> lifehistory<br />

stage.<br />

In general, female <strong>and</strong> small male king crabs are found<br />

closer to shore <strong>and</strong> somewhat east of large males (Otto, MacIntosh, Armetta<br />

<strong>and</strong> Wilson 1980; Otto 1981b; Figs. 3.3 <strong>and</strong> 3.4; small crabs are classified<br />

as males
