Officers Enhance Nation’s<br />
Ability To Combat Child<br />
<strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
The Government of Malawi has recruited 400<br />
child protection officers to serve <strong>in</strong> the country’s<br />
27 local government districts. These officers<br />
are specially tra<strong>in</strong>ed to recognize children<br />
who are victims of exploitation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
traffick<strong>in</strong>g, to raise awareness at the grassroots<br />
level, and to provide re<strong>in</strong>tegration assistance <strong>for</strong><br />
traffick<strong>in</strong>g victims. Serv<strong>in</strong>g a critical role, they<br />
monitor communities <strong>for</strong> signs of traffick<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Approximately half of the reported traffick<strong>in</strong>g<br />
cases <strong>in</strong> Malawi are identified by these officers.<br />

Bosnia and Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a: NGO<br />
Provides Free Legal Aid <strong>for</strong><br />
<strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Victims<br />
Vasa Prava is the only NGO provid<strong>in</strong>g pro bono<br />
legal assistance to victims of human traffick<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
Bosnia and Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a. Founded <strong>in</strong> 1996, the<br />
organization runs 16 permanent offices and 50<br />
mobile units staffed by 80 employees, and it has<br />
assisted more than 400,000 Bosnians. Attorneys<br />
from Vasa Prava are available to domestic victims<br />
from the time they arrive at a shelter, even if<br />
they are not <strong>for</strong>mally registered by the state, and<br />
arrange all residency permits and asylum applications<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>for</strong>eign victims. If a victim chooses to<br />
testify, Vasa Prava represents the <strong>in</strong>dividual from<br />
the first statement until trial completion.<br />
Through its uni<strong>for</strong>m approach and <strong>in</strong>termediary<br />
work between victims and government, Vasa<br />
Prava has also helped to strengthen the rule of<br />
law <strong>in</strong> Bosnia and Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a. Victims assisted<br />
by Vasa Prava are more likely to testify aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
their traffickers <strong>in</strong> crim<strong>in</strong>al proceed<strong>in</strong>gs and have<br />
provided critical testimony lead<strong>in</strong>g to the conviction<br />
of several notorious traffickers and organized<br />
crime r<strong>in</strong>gs. Vasa Prava per<strong>for</strong>ms an <strong>in</strong>tegral civil<br />
role that the Bosnian Government, due to fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and logistical restra<strong>in</strong>ts, cannot fulfill, and has<br />
given a voice to those previously silenced.<br />
Czech Republic: Elite Police<br />
Unit Combats Labor <strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
The national police organized crime unit created<br />
a specialized police <strong>in</strong>vestigative department<br />
to <strong>in</strong>vestigate and combat labor traffick<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
This has allowed police to focus resources and<br />
manpower to <strong>in</strong>vestigate sophisticated crim<strong>in</strong>al<br />
networks <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>for</strong>ced labor. To strengthen<br />
<strong>in</strong>tragovernmental cooperation <strong>in</strong> <strong>for</strong>ced labor<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestigations, the unit coord<strong>in</strong>ates with labor<br />
<strong>in</strong>spectors who en<strong>for</strong>ce labor laws perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g conditions.<br />
Germany: Comprehensive<br />
World Cup Response Model<br />
The Government of Germany, <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
organizations, and NGOs <strong>in</strong>itiated prevention<br />
and protection measures <strong>for</strong> the 2006 World Cup<br />
<strong>in</strong> mid-2005 that serve as an effective model <strong>for</strong><br />
future, large-scale <strong>in</strong>ternational sport<strong>in</strong>g events.<br />
Over a year be<strong>for</strong>e the World Cup began, German<br />
law en<strong>for</strong>cement authorities developed specialized<br />
strategies and concepts to prevent and <strong>in</strong>vestigate<br />
sex traffick<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the games, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g an<br />
overall World Cup National Security concept, a<br />
state-federal law en<strong>for</strong>cement <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation-shar<strong>in</strong>g<br />
network, and greater police presence <strong>in</strong> red-light<br />
districts. Politicians and public figures at all levels<br />
actively promoted anti-traffick<strong>in</strong>g ef<strong>for</strong>ts dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
