of major public campaigns conducted by NGOs,<br />

and supported 24-hour hotl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>for</strong> traffick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

victims and World Cup attendees. Posters and<br />

flyers were displayed <strong>in</strong> key areas where fans<br />

gathered to watch games on large outdoor screens,<br />

reach<strong>in</strong>g a much larger audience than previous<br />

anti-traffick<strong>in</strong>g campaigns.<br />

Crackdown on Child Sex<br />

Tourism<br />

The NGO Childsafe Program has tra<strong>in</strong>ed 36 mototaxi<br />

drivers and employees of 25 guesthouses to<br />

protect and identify children who are at risk of<br />

commercial sexual exploitation <strong>in</strong> Sihanoukville,<br />

a beach resort town. The program tra<strong>in</strong>s drivers<br />

of moto-dups (two-wheeled taxis) and tuk-tuks<br />

(three-wheeled taxis) to identify and report any<br />

suspicious behavior by tourists who may have the<br />

<strong>in</strong>tention of exploit<strong>in</strong>g children.<br />

Cambodia: NGO Helps Arrest<br />

Child Sex Tourists<br />

Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE) focuses on<br />

eradicat<strong>in</strong>g street-based sexual exploitation<br />

and arrest<strong>in</strong>g travel<strong>in</strong>g child-sex offenders <strong>in</strong><br />

Cambodia. As a result of APLE’s work <strong>in</strong> 2006,<br />

Cambodian authorities arrested 21 child-sex<br />

offenders and pedophiles. APLE has worked with<br />

local police and judicial officials, monitored these<br />

same officials, facilitated greater <strong>in</strong>volvement of<br />

<strong>for</strong>eign police officials, and provided legal representation<br />

to victims who would otherwise not be<br />

able to af<strong>for</strong>d a lawyer.<br />

Nepal: <strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Survivors<br />

Work To Prevent <strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Shakti Samuaha, the first NGO <strong>in</strong> the world<br />

<strong>for</strong>med by traffick<strong>in</strong>g survivors, organized a<br />

conference attended by more than 120 survivors<br />

to mark the 97th International <strong>Women</strong>’s Day.<br />

Many of the women traveled <strong>for</strong> two or three days<br />

on foot due to transportation strikes. The survivors<br />

assembled to focus on prevent<strong>in</strong>g human traffick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of vulnerable populations, particularly<br />

adolescent girls, and provid<strong>in</strong>g rehabilitative<br />

services <strong>for</strong> traffick<strong>in</strong>g survivors. The organization<br />

upholds human rights at the core of its human<br />

traffick<strong>in</strong>g strategy and compels policy makers to<br />

work from the perspective of victims of traffick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and those who are the most vulnerable.<br />

Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso: National<br />

Truckers Union Intercepts<br />

Human <strong>Traffick<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Victims<br />

The local NGO, Lutrena Project <strong>for</strong> the Mobilization<br />

and Build<strong>in</strong>g Capacity of Road Haulers, <strong>for</strong>med an<br />

alliance with the Truckers Union to <strong>in</strong>tercept and<br />

repatriate human traffick<strong>in</strong>g victims. The project<br />

established an anti-traffick<strong>in</strong>g alert system at bus<br />

stations <strong>in</strong> seven of the 13 regions where child<br />

traffick<strong>in</strong>g is prevalent. The anti-traffick<strong>in</strong>g network<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes representatives of truckers unions, security<br />

<strong>for</strong>ces, social action groups, and both religious and<br />

traditional groups to identify and report suspected<br />

traffick<strong>in</strong>g situations. The anti-traffick<strong>in</strong>g network<br />

has successfully <strong>in</strong>tercepted 549 children, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

four girls, <strong>in</strong> the past year and enabled the prosecution<br />

of 29 traffickers.<br />

“The fact that there are <strong>for</strong>ms of slavery <strong>in</strong> our<br />

world today should fill us all with shame. As an<br />

African woman, I would add that it also fills me<br />

with rage.”<br />

Bangladesh: Confront<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Prostitution of Boys<br />

The NGO INDICIN is one of the most prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

advocates of children’s rights <strong>in</strong> the country. It is<br />

also the first NGO <strong>in</strong> the country to tackle such<br />

sensitive issues as underage male prostitution, a<br />

little-discussed problem <strong>in</strong> the country. INCIDIN<br />

has worked to remove the stigma of discuss<strong>in</strong>g<br />

this subject and to shed light on this phenomenon.<br />

INCIDIN opened a safe-night shelter <strong>for</strong><br />

street children <strong>in</strong> Dhaka and worked with the<br />

Government of Bangladesh to expand the program<br />

to other parts of the country.<br />
