‘Every medicament does more or less offend nature, as its faculty<br />

is stronger or weaker: by so much it causes more molestation.’<br />

‘Those which by a certain antipathy, and special potency impair<br />

the principles of life, spirit and heat, consume the flesh, and destroy<br />

the integrity of sanity, must not be exhibited without extraordinary<br />

care and prudence; as vipers flesh against the pestilence or leprosy,<br />

the reins 114 or rather the flesh of the loins of Stincus 115 to provoke to<br />

venery, Cantharides against the retention and obstruction of urine;<br />

for these cantharides rightly prepared and mixed with fit<br />

medicaments, and administered in a small quantity, do move urine<br />

without harm.’<br />

Quicksilver: ‘Often causes palsy, stupour and tremblings... move<br />

salivation…hurt the nerves, and sometimes cause strangulation.’<br />

Opium:..’ and much discommend it, if unduly used; for it does not<br />

only induce tremour and palsy, but leads to perpetual sleep.’<br />

Hellebore: ‘it excites vomit in the assumer, and its powders<br />

adhibited at the nostrils, moves sternutation 116 ’…‘it is perilous to the<br />

sane, imbecil, and young.’<br />

Henbane: ‘because such as are maddened with Henbane, torment<br />
