‘For the French Pox
Take of black turpentine i.d, oh. 57 Bolear moniacke i.d, Alum three
groats weight, and as much of Argentum Vif (Quicksilver), and
mingle them all with fasting spittle, and it will flee. Give Seraphine,
three groats weight, give Armoniac as much Popillion, a spoonful
and a half, Verdigris as much as of your gumes, and anoint the body
and keep him close, and give him to drink the juice of Galles often,
for it will drive them out of the body, and if there be any unkind sore
that will not heal, cast there upon powder of Mercury sublimed, but it
is painful, and Popillion will slake the pain, and some men after their
healing two or three years break out of scabs and great sores on
their body, and in the soles of their feet, and will not heal for no
medicine. Then take the root of Clecompana, and pare it fair, and
beat it as fine as you can, then take fair swines grease fresh, and
beat them strongly together, and anoint the place in two or three
days it is whole. Also I have seen men broken out in the face, full of
small quadelles like scabs, and that have I beat dib..illed with the
powder of Alum, and Verdigris and Popillion.’
