Master <strong>of</strong> Science in<br />

Geographic Information Science (Winona)<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Geographic Information Science (GIS) is a 41<br />

semester credit graduate degree intended to prepare learners for<br />

careers in the geographic information sciences.<br />

The program focuses on the application <strong>of</strong> modern spatial analytical<br />

techniques to solve real-world problems. In many organizations, the role<br />

<strong>of</strong> geographic information science not only includes geospatial data<br />

development and analysis, but also project management.<br />

In Winona, this holistic integration <strong>of</strong> GIS technologies is set in the<br />

disciplinary areas <strong>of</strong> homeland security/emergency management, natural<br />

resource management, business administration, and policy<br />

administration/criminal justice. Learners not only learn GIS concepts and<br />

techniques, but also how to apply these in the disciplinary area <strong>of</strong> their<br />

interest, all in a residential based learning environment.<br />

Program Competencies<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Geographic Information Science<br />

program are expected to be able to do the following:<br />

1. Demonstrate expertise in spatial data analysis.<br />

2. Demonstrate expertise in spatial database design and management,<br />

and geographic information systems (GIS) customization.<br />

3. Apply GIS competencies in the student’s area <strong>of</strong> discipline.<br />

4. Demonstrate critical thinking skills.<br />

5. Communicate effectively in a variety <strong>of</strong> modes including managing<br />

and distributing geospatial data via the web.<br />

6. Work effectively with diverse populations.<br />

7. Create an ethical environment.<br />

8. Effectively manage technology, projects and people.<br />

9. Direct and continue learning throughout their lives.<br />
