ELA161<br />

Advanced Academic Reading and Writing (6 cr.)<br />

This course is designed to prepare students to meet the reading and<br />

writing expectations <strong>of</strong> college-level coursework. Using a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

readings from a range <strong>of</strong> general education topics, students encounter<br />

critical reading skills and strategies for differentiating between genres <strong>of</strong><br />

material. Using the Process Approach to Writing, students are<br />

encouraged to write critically about topics across the curriculum,<br />

exploring types <strong>of</strong> college writing such as the research paper, the essay,<br />

and the persuasive paper. Special attention is given to cultural and<br />

idiomatic uses <strong>of</strong> the language.<br />

ELA400<br />

Academic Listening and Speaking for Graduate Studies (6 cr.)<br />

Application Process<br />

Applicants must submit:<br />

1. Completed application form with the nonrefundable application fee<br />

(fee not required for alumni or students seeking readmission, or<br />

veterans and active military personnel) and,<br />

2. Evidence <strong>of</strong> high school completion (transcript, diploma or GED) and,<br />

3. Complete an interview with a program administrator.<br />

Note: Application materials should be sent to the attention <strong>of</strong> the Office<br />

<strong>of</strong> Admission on the Twin Cities campus.<br />

This course, designed for advanced English Language Learners,<br />

prepares students to engage in the lively and challenging dialogue <strong>of</strong> the<br />

graduate classroom, to understand fully the concepts and information<br />

presented verbally in class, and to participate as an active member <strong>of</strong><br />

graduate classroom working groups.<br />

ELA401<br />

Academic Reading and Writing for Graduate Studies (6 cr.)<br />

This course, designed for advanced English Language Learners,<br />

prepares students for the intense, lengthy, and advanced reading and<br />

writing requirements <strong>of</strong> graduate studies. The focus is on research<br />

reading and writing, as well as developing thoughtful analyses <strong>of</strong> difficult<br />

material and accurate and careful documentation in APA format.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

Applicants may apply for admission to undergraduate certificate<br />

programs at any time during the year and, if accepted, begin the<br />

program during any one <strong>of</strong> the three semesters. Applicants must<br />

possess a high school diploma or GED. Applicants must demonstrate the<br />

language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency necessary for successful completion <strong>of</strong><br />

undergraduate coursework.
