Learner Outcomes<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> programs in pastoral ministry are expected to:<br />

1. Understand essential Catholic doctrines, illuminating theological<br />

explorations, and their pastoral applications.<br />

2. Understand and demonstrate the Second Vatican Council's teachings<br />

on the universal call to holiness, including the concept <strong>of</strong> baptismal<br />

vocation, as related to their role as leaders <strong>of</strong> the faith community.<br />

3. Understand and demonstrate the Church's mission in relation to<br />

one's vocation to lay ecclesial ministry or diaconal ministry.<br />

4. Understand and be adept at pastoral practices both typical and<br />

emergent in the Roman Catholic tradition.<br />

Sequence for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts (30 cr.) and the Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Certificate (30 CEUs) in Pastoral Ministries<br />

The curriculum in Pastoral Ministries for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts and<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Certificate <strong>of</strong>fers six theology courses, three pastoral skills<br />

courses (including two electives), and three integrated pastoral research<br />

(IPR) courses, for a total <strong>of</strong> 12 courses. During each <strong>of</strong> the three summer<br />

residencies, learners typically enroll in two theology courses and one<br />

pastoral skills course. Required only for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts, the integrated<br />

pastoral research courses are registered in the three successive years<br />

and are self-managed, with completion between summer residencies.<br />

The mentorship <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essor and the associate program director are<br />

assets to insure each student's success.<br />

law <strong>of</strong> living (lex vivendi) is evident in Human Relations in Ministry.<br />

PM500–502<br />

Introduction to Pastoral Theology (1 cr. or 1.3 CEUs each)<br />

Participants in diocesan lay ministry leadership schools will complete a<br />

tailored learning contract with the Institute in Pastoral Ministries.<br />

Completion <strong>of</strong> related contracts results in advanced placement for the<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Pastoral Ministries.<br />

PM505<br />

Human Relations in Ministry (2 cr. or 2 CEUs)<br />

Various dynamics <strong>of</strong> leadership applied to pastoral ministry will be<br />

examined, including listening, affirming, and confronting.<br />

PM510<br />

Leadership in the Faith Community (2 cr. or 2 CEUs)<br />

Various styles <strong>of</strong> leadership and their relevance for invigorating the<br />

Catholic community will be examined. Particular emphasis is given to the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> individual leadership and to the organization, purpose,<br />

mission, and vision required to develop a faith community.<br />

The Church at Prayer (2 cr. or 2 CEUs)<br />

Prerequisite: PM570<br />

This course is designed to assist pastoral ministers in preparing and<br />

leading the church in communal prayer. Learners examine the principles,<br />

patterns <strong>of</strong> worship, and pastoral goals in liturgical planning. Special<br />

attention is given to the role <strong>of</strong> lay liturgical leadership in the assembly<br />

and other settings.<br />

Christian Spiritualities (2 cr. or 2 CEUs)<br />

Practices that enhance being in relationship to God are examined.<br />

Cultural, denominational, doctrinal, physical, and psychological aspects<br />

are included.<br />
